Richard Thompson

Hi Rob. Love your and Tom's engineering work on Richard Thompson's fantastic Mock Tudor album. I have a few questions if you'd be so kind:

1) Do you remember the vocal tracking chain?
2) What was the mic setup on Dave Mattacks drum kit?
3) Which console was it tracked/mixed on?

Thanks so much for your generous sharing of knowledge.

cool glad you asked,i loved making this record.
so as the memory sets into the slog of my brain i cant vouch for the complete accuracy but here it goes.
i think vocal chain wouldve been the Soundelux U95S
1176 tubetech pultec.
something like that.

the drums were a lesson in how much the drummer makes a difference.
dave mattacks had such great internal balance that he basically mixed himself.
he was atuned to his kit both tuning and touch.
as far as our end technically, wouldve been pretty standard set up.
57 top and bottom snare.
D112 inside U195 outside kick
421's on toms?
67's or maybe 84's for OH's.
cant really remember what the room combo was but maybe coles 47's 67's
were used and SF12 closer.
tracked in studio B at capitol on the 8068.
a really great sounding drum room.
mixed at sunset sound in studio 1 on the custom console.
that was that.....

Wonderful stuff, thanks Rob. Agreed, Dave Mattacks is a phenomenal player. From Liege and Lief onward, it's been nothing but tasteful, toneful drum work.

if memory serves me correctly, dave had two sets set up.
we had one on the riser in the corner of the room
and another on the floor next to it.
i know one of them was a really nice sounding set of Daves a yamaha recording series with evans heads.
and maybe the other was stop sign gretsch from drum doctor?
not totally sure on that but something like that....

Interesting. I wonder if you recall whether Mattacks was playing to a click for Thompson's stuff, or whether it was open time.

The yamaha recording series was the real deal.
I assumed for some reason they would be the SPX90 of drums.
Nope.

I really love the Toms on the Yamaha recording custom - though I could never really make the kick work for me … So I use the toms sometimes with a Ludwig kick - love it

Well sort of, it was the sunset custom console in studio one.
Loaded with 550A's with 990's in them.
And 990 is the block that the console is built on, ifthats the right way to say it.
Very beautiful sounding desk.

I've prolly gushed about that song but 'LA' just sounds farkn fantastic!.. punch, clarity and tone... even off Spotify!

Agree about the 990 block.. I think that topology just is punch.

How different is the Sunset desk compared to the funky Delconn that was at Oceanway?

The sunset console has headroom for days. The delcon you really needed to mind your gain structure.
It didnt like when you got into the stereo buss. Had to keep it around zero .
But it sounded really cool.

Yes to both.
Great tools in the tool box.
Love the level-ors aon all different sort of things.
But in mix mode they seem to find themselves hovering around the drums.
The stretch is really cool.
I have dolby 361's with the modded cards
A one trick pony but when it works it makes you look smart.
Ian took the stretch and
Squeezed all the possibilities out of the dolby A mod
And knocked it the **** out of the park.

for the uninitiated, is the stretch/dolby thing a tight limited/compressed sort of thing? i'm thinking fleetwood mac, rumours drums.
i assume by the name it also can heavily compress and expand no?
cheers for the info.

Put the first one into action on monday and it instantly went on to the snare and sounded really great.
Used the transformer module and the jfet module.
Brought out a nice splat.
Just finished the second one tonite.
Looking forward to experimenting with the other modules as they come out.

Rob - if you're interested in some modules with a different twist, contact Brad McGowan on this board. Louder than Liftoff is his new company. He's got some modules in the works that you might like. Tell him Bill sent ya and to hook you up.

I am going to have to get some of these....

Well the dolby A mod was to use the upper one or two bands of the encode expansion in playback.
So its freq sensitive airy expanded top.
But Ian took it in all directions.
