I can relate.
I used to not care for Tommy Sonically.
I still have the original vinyl.it always sounded kinda thin to me.drums panned funny etc.
I always blamed it on Kit Lambert lol.
these new remasters sound like completely new mixes.
punchy, really full and drums are more "there".amazingly cool Bass gtr sound.
I kinda had to do a double take when i first listened to it in my car..sounded great.
imo it now measures up to any else from back then.

vs. the rev d and mohog.
the end game being a pair of infratronics or mohogs in the rack...cant afford another D.

having the 2 xformers on the outputs is a real selling point for me with the mohogs.

i have 2 and use them all the time.

I like the mohogs a lot.
interesting it was a real selling point when I bought it although dont use the carnill switch that much.usually enough of that thickness coming from the neve n tube, retro stuff.

Good point. i almost always use the carnhil as my console is transformerless and i need the extra juice.
it's great that you can tailor these to your setup.

Have you guys checked out the Serpent Splice? 1176 A and D versions in one box. I have a couple one-off 500's but they were too complex to build, so Mike @ Serpent went to a rack version instead. Magical, and perfect for what I was looking for. Every 1176 flavor I wanted in one box.

Yeah I Love the splice rack unit! It's very cool. I still hope I can talk him into thinking about figuring out away to release the 500's down the road. Having that kind of comp in a 500 rack is very cool. Until then the chimera and the Great River PWM 501 will have to do.

The kit was a set of 68 ludwigs.
13 16 22.
Floor tom had the iso feet which makes quite a bit of difference for de coupling.
Snares were 50's radio king, black beauty, 20's 15" brass, suprophonic and something else tuned down with paper on it.

When you say isolating feet do you mean the pearl ones or something else?

I dont know who makes them but they are rubber and have a circular opening in the bottom half of them.
I was surprised what a difference they made.
The rack sounded great but the floor wouldnt ring out the same.
Problem solved......

Yeh they sound like the pearl ones. Same thing with my premier kit, the rack sounds amazing but the floor gets that dead, skin sound as soon as it's on the floor. I find it's a lot better on a drum riser, but sound of the kit is better on the hard floor. Like you said, problem solved!

All my kits have the pearl rubber feet.they work.
Also if your recording with a rack Tom on a snare stand aka Charlie watts either small foam rubber pipe insulation wrapped around the cradle arms opens the sound up dramatically .
The other less visually abtrusive way is the high end DW snare stands..
They have a softer more rubber like material on the ends of the cradles.
Lets the Tom breath and resonate.

i have one those DW stands for the rack.
Just got a set of 71 ludwigs thru john at angel city.
Chris did the edges.
Man it sounds good.

So the serpent 500 sounds like an 1176 or sounds like a cool compressor?
