Hi Rob,

Been following this thread from afar, but wanted to ask about the Compact 7's--just got a pair. Do you have them upright or on their sides? far from the front wall/glass? These really sound smooth and just a blast to listen to.

Hey bobby

Yeah the compact 7s are pretty cool arentthey?

Mine are upright, angled down into the listening position a bit,
Just so the tweets dont shoot over the ears.
They end up being about 3 or so feet from the dead wall as they sit on the console.

Question for you, how did you like the schmidlin limiterr?

Rob--thanks for getting back to me. Yeah the 7's are just killing me. Remind me of big old Klipsch speakers your best friend's dad had when you were kid & you'd crank them when the parents were gone. I know I need to pull them farther from the wall, I'm getting some mega bass right now, and the tweeters are a little over my head, but what a blast. English speakers are as un-neurotic as they get if you know what I mean.

The Schmidlin is a really great comp-- a perfect recreation of the Federal in terms of sound, but waaaay too many knobs for me personally. (We have a souped up 500 series console and I'm all about simplifying.) Mavericks Recording Studio NYC

Ah thanks Rob, that means a lot-- I'm lucky as hell to keep the place going in NYC. There are a few nice landlords left in the world... I'm a mad idiot about the U33-- about the most "complicated" piece of gear in the place. I have a close friend who had a fairchild for years, and after he sold it for stupid money, this piece really does that thing and more. Track and 2 bus all the time with it, and it just works on a lot of stuff. It's not as much a problem solver as it is a hot fudge sundae with a juicy cherry on top.

Built in hi pass filters
Expanded attack and release times among other features.
Sounded really great on room mics.

Interesting.

So is it mono or stereo? If stereo, I guess it's a double wide?

Ok. Was curious about your perceived differences. Finding the Serpent nice and chewy in a great way. And very flexible, too.

I think I could find a spot for that in our board... that would be sooo nice to have. Any experience with the Retro Doublewide?

hey RB,

nice running into you here... I never dreamed the 500 series stuff would take off to this extent, we chose our console primarily because we had so much older api gear, and could just fill them right in. What blows my mind now is there are so few people making cool efx for 500 series modules. We've been using the new moog delays, and the ladder, but what about gtr effects, noise boxes, distortion, just generally ****ed up weird ****? I've spoken to designers and they say it's an expensive format, gtr pedals are a lot cheaper to make in metal box, but I know many people who would love to have this format, IF the box sounds great. We just added a Roland Dimension D 500, and it's beautiful sounding. Nothing like patching something in right in front of you and you're off...

cool Bobby.
I havent heard of the 500 Dimension D.
who makes it?
Do you have any Levelors? they're really cool.
I use them a lot as a pair on a stereo parallel bus on the distortion settings.
sent things to them for a little extra crunch/dirt/edge explosion underneath like toms and sometimes gtrs,vx etc.

The Dimension D is here: TBDD-500 Assembled | TB Audio

Really captures that sound, double wide stereo unit. Want another.

Have to check out the Levelors, imagine they'd sound great on vocals and snare too.

Oh yeah
Got one of each.
The ladder filter is really cool.
Can make a ****ty kick drum sound big.
You can really sonically tune tracks.
If have some poorly recorded gtrs you can dial in the sweet spot.
Very useful device.

I had a hard time finding somebody to work on them.
There is alot of stuff packed into those mics
