I've been curious about that filter. Will need to check it out at some point.

Right now, I'm getting my STEREO LA3A DIY clones today. Serpent Audio kit. Can't WAIT. Been without 3A;s for far too long....

I had Dan Deurloo of Collective Cases make them for me. He's here on GS and has built a pair for himself, and knows Mike @ Serpent well. Great guy who loves/lives DIY. Seemed like a logical choice. Mike is going to phase out his LA3A kit, which IMO is the only real clone out there. Sad, so although I was gearing up for his Splice comps, I decided to jump on the 3A's first. I know Dan is building up a bunch of the 3A's for people, and the cost is a bit less than a single channel of the re-issues from UA.

On the T4B front, we used Drips. He's making them again. Man, I'm really getting excited now. Come on Mr. Postman!

[PS - I'll put up a thread on the highend forum with some pics and thoughts so we don't clog up Rob's thread...heh]

RB - A great experience so far. The sound is what I expected - Wonderful. Vocals tomorrow instead of Gtrs. She will be ON the tracking bus... I put up a thread (see below) with some pics and comments on the sound. Will post up some clips when I get a chance and get more sessions with it under my belt. But inserting into PT is......

dude.

You know what I'm going to say.....

Here's the thread :

rob you ever try the Blackspade um 17 on drums?
ever try the UM25?
the only way to demo is buy and trial 10 return.
I'm looking for an affordable upgrade to my old 414eb's for overs.

I'm sure Rob will have some valuable insights there but in the meantime & fwiw,
i've had really good results w a UM17R 2-3 ft FOK ...along w an R84 up top and dynamic of choice on snare.

I liked he blackspade UM17. But never tried it on drums.
They had loaned one to me for awhile and then moved it on
To somebody that records lots of jazz.
He had it up against his 67's 47's blah blah.
He reported, it sounded real good on some stuff and was out performed on other.
But bottom line is that it hung with the company for whatever thats worth.
It wasnt modern hypie which made me very happy......

The nail really shined thru.

Has good attitude and fidelity.

Hey Rob,

Little of topic but... I've been listening to Tokyo Police Club's - Champ. Lots of really cool experimental guitar tones and awesome fx and delays all over the guitars on that record.

Do you remember how the intro guitar for Frankenstein was recorded and what effects used to achieve the result?

Great album. Thanks Rob.

I think frankenstein is one of those boss digital delays.
Or maybe it was two of them with really clsoe delays.
So he is actually playing alot less then it sounds.
Like 1/8 notes but with those delays it sounds crazier.
Lots of blackface princeton and ampeg gemini.
ES 330's teles supro 1446.
Echoplex .
What else?

Well I remember seeing pictures from the session and being really intrigued by the front of kick mic. I have tried it out a few times with varying results so if you have any tips there that would be awesome. What do you listen for in that mic?

Listen for a nice natural low end.
Use a mic that helps that.
I like the U195 in fat mode.
A fet 47 was the choice before that.
Sometimes build a dog house around it to keep crap out
Depending on the room and the drummer.
Can trigger a gate with inside mic.
Just knocking it back, nothing crazy.
And same goes for eq, not going crazy on it,just using it as a
Natural element to extend the low end without twisting it with a bunch of eq.

Thanks so much,

I'm going to build the doghouse you suggested. I always find that I am lpf the cymbals out of it when I tried it. Is that something you would have done?

Make sure you make cross supports with the T tube connectors
So the blankies don't dip on top

But I'll try to find some pics
It works REALLY well
Mine has the front head side a little bigger than a 26" kick drum
Then the other end expands out wider
