Oh yeah. I gotta do the dorky thing and ask you what the bass rig on "FTW" was.

And thanks again for coming around.

rainfall is a pretty simple song.
but it is layered.
its 2 different kinds of acoustics doubled amounting to 4 acoustics playing the same thing.
they are then bounced down to a stereo pair.
electric rhthyms are doubled.
12st solo and thats about it.
of course there are all the bgv parts which are all doubled.

Sometimes when I hear a record that's as well conceived as Winning Days, I wonder how close the finished songs are to what was originally written.

As I think everyone knows, some songwriters come in with chords and words on a napkin and some come in with pretty complete home demos.

You know, just trying to get an idea of the band's working process.

"Rainfall" is such a great arrangement, especially in the way the drums come and go during the first half. (really nice tom sounds btw. )

Also, wondering how much layering you do as far as guitars go. Lately I've been tending to let one guitar cover a line whereas I would have layered more in the past.

I like the openness in the middle of the mix, too. Overall, the record has a good amount of breathing room. I think anyone making modern rock records could use a listen to this.

Hey, it sounds loud enough and is a pleasure to listen to. Guess they don't have to be mutually exclusive.[/QUOTE]

ftw bass sound

i think it might've been a marshall and an svt.
we tried lots of different things and really wanted to keep it simple.
how do you get good grind and have good bottom.
this was the solution.
the bass was also doubled in certain sections of the song if my memory
holds up right.
but it doesn't always

oktava mod

i bought a mkl 2500 off of eby a few years back and never used it.
it was one of those "pretty good" purchases.
but not bad by any means but not good enough.
anyways, sent it to michael joly (oktava mods) and he did his mechanical and electrical improvements to it.
what a difference.
we were doing vocals and put it up to see what it sounded like against the other usual suspects (if you wanna know i'll tell you but thats not the point)
it won the shoot out for this particular vocal.
it had a high output was in your face , forward, not super hyped.
pretty damn impressive.
i'm curious as to what the other oktave mods sound like......
thats my tip of the day.

The Oktava Mod MK319 Flattop mod with premium electronics rules as well. I never used the 319 much, but this is becoming one of my faves. check that too.

Hi Rob,

Was wondering how you liked working with Starsailor. Love that record!

And, if you remember, what the vocal chain was for James' vocals?

Cheers...

starsailor was alot of fun.
great bunch of guys and really good players.
james was pretty much a two take kinda singer
and then do a few more for details and experiments.
the vocal chain, hmmmm i think we used two different russian mics
the lomo 19A9 and the tube MK13.
i believe we used a V72 for the mic pre and a distressor and 1176 for compression.

thats good to know.
i almost pulled the trigger on that a few times.
it seems like a very reasonable way to get
a pair of usable and useful mics cheap.

Wow, I've never even heard of a Lomo microphone. I was under the impression, sonically, that some of his vocals were an SM57...

And 2" tape?

uh oh, sounds like a 57?
lomo is russian.
yeah there was 2" tape involved.
i think that was the last record we did on 2".

On some songs, yes...perhaps it's subliminal. I looked up the Lomo. What an interesting looking mic! How much do they go for usually?

I knew it had to be 2". Sounds great. On The Outside is definitely one of my favorite albums of the past few years.

They hit a new chord with that record. Edgier, more rock and roll.

Will you be involved with their next?

that was the goal to have them rock a bit more.
i'm not sure what will happen on the next record.
we sort of talked about it but there are more factors at play than what we think.
i think the record was a bit of a commercial dissappointment for them.
this is the record they should've made as a follow up to carry the momentum of the debut.
also, there were some serious record company politics at play.
and they fell victim to that somewhat.
timing is so crucial.
its a card game.

You brought a new level out of James' vocals, for certain. I can't say enough.

I think you're right about the second album thing. I think James wrote a myspace blog about wanting to marry the rock and the ballad side together on the 4th record.

I'll be buying it regardless.

Wouldn't suprise me,considering some of their recent business tactics
There was some talk about Genex royally screwing over customers on this thread:

https://www.gearslutz.com/board/moan-...se-help-3.html

looks like quite a few gripes, especially on tha last page
..some very frustrated/disgruntled high end customers to say the least
At this point,Buyer beware as far as Genex is concerned.
seen a lot of Genex stuff for sale lately

Hmm, dunno, will do some investigating.

I did hear snippets of an interview with Bernard on JJJ where he mentioned that they have to re-record the vocals on a tune called "Black Tears" due to a court injunction. Not entirely sure what that's about.

what a shame, the verbena record.
it was alot of fun to make followed by the classic record company nonsense.
forcing certain songs on fussing over the sequence.
busting some balls followed by nothing.
capitol had once again, worked its magic.
barely knew it came out.
but i digress.
we had the full guitarsenal out.
it was a mixture of a bunch of old amps.
i can specifically remember using an old superlead, a laney klipp,
DRZ SRZ65, KT45, klemt echolette, selmer treble and bass,
sound city 50+, AC50, AC30, a 6V6 garnet head with the stinger,
the V4.
lots of tele les paul combinations along with a les paul and guild M75
combination.
we did the drumbs in two batches, one group of songs were cut at the pass and another was in Capitol 'B'.
if you got a particular question in mind i'll try to answer it but its been awhile.
