Its what kinda sucks about monitors these days, way more active options and fewer and fewer passive options.

That being said, really like my Opals....clean and loud as hell, no wimpy amps or low threshold limiters there.

If there was a passive that compared, woulda got it instead. There just isn't much to chose from anymore.

Everything else I have is passive though

I was kind of hoping I'd find some new friends for my Williams modded Adcom 545, which I rather like, too......but then the PSIs scuppered the plan as nothing passive I heard compares. Not selling the amp though, I'm sure he'll find a new friends in the future. Some day maybe try those Digital Phase thingies.....people talk ridiculously highly of...

do you still use the Proacs from time to time rob?
How exactly do the harbeths compare to the Proacs...i´ve read that they reach down a bit lower but is there any other quality that they offer compared to the Proacs?

cheers

Day one of the MJE K47 head for the 012.
Sounds impressive.
Smooth and expensive.
219 with K47 and electronics has fantastic character.
Sounded great on the fliptop.
Nice work michael!

Agreed with all of that Rob - but especially the K47H!!! I was excited to hear the new 012/K47H, but after putting it up on my voice (I'm NOT a singer) I was just floored. I'm trying to wrap my head around why this thing sounds sooooooo damn good. I'm wondering if that uber-heavy piece of brass directly below the capsule is what's making it so "muscular" sounding - for lack of a better term. It just feels "ripped" to me - like a big pumped up weightlifter. heh

MJ told me he kind of hears it like a cross between a vintage condenser and a ribbon - and I think I'd have to agree. Open with enough detail up top, but so smooth and very natural sounding with a big - but not flabby - bottom.. Looking forward to putting it on drums and Ac Gtr next week if I can get past this motorcycle crash pain, get some range of motion in my shoulder and start driving again.

I have the M1 (& Michaels 012) but still intrigued by this K47.

hope it's not too serious Bill. maybe an excuse to take a pain killer will ensue.

I'll try the K47H's on my 0000-18 and Overs. You go on amped gtr. I bet they will be KILLER there. Just my instinct.....

Motorcycle? Accident out in the desert. Out on some trail riding the new Husqvarna, lost the front end and highsided in the middle of nowhere on a sandy trail. Planted my shoulder into soft sand so it took all the impact of my body as I just "stuck it" in the sand. No "moving" or sliding across the ground - so it tore up the rotator cuff and shoulder pretty good. Had to ride it all the way back to my truck that way just for fun..... In addition I may have fractiured my collarbone, and definitely compressed the previously broken (crushed) vertabrae on my back. The weird part is, the back feels fine, but it telescopes it's pain with pinched nerves into the upper chest with plenty of upper body chest pain (think heart attack). Anyway, making progress s l o w l y..... Like you said, getting old sucks.

Makes sense. Michael's ldc meets a ribbon description is interesting.

Not sure about you, but I don't find myself using the M1 so much lately (tend to grab the um17R moreso these days) might have to give this one a try.

I just go with what sounds good on the singer.
Right now the mkl2500 modded by michael is
Killing it on the vocals.
Or slightly more technically speaking, it seems to match up well with this singers voice.

The modified 219 sounded fantastic on marshall cabs.
Both with vintage 30's and vintage greenbacks.
A very nice clear bottom with a non hyped natural sounding
Top end.
A really pleasing quality to the sound.
Trying it out on vocals today.

OOOH interesting.. i always had a soft spot .. or is it a hardon for the MK219 on a marshall cab too. Plugged into a 1073 bang! there it is!

Might have to look into the mod.

Do you use your MCI 400 pre's much? Did you hot rod them with Bova dots anything?

The mci is completely hotrodded.
From power distro to the stereo buss and everything in between.
But didnt use any bova dots.
Kinda went a different route.
Dont mean to repeat but here is a quick overview,
the quad buss has been broken up into to two stereo busses.
One is 990/jensen the other neve 283/marinars.
The channels have been re chipped with various flavors of stuff.
And the eq has been reworked with 10 inductor based freqs on the top and botttom bands
And Converted to fet from bipolar.
Fader was moved to post eq..
Monitor section has added amp stage, dumps into stereo buss and is transformerless.
All molex removed. big honkin buss wire for ground and big ass wire for power distro.
Insert send/return added.
Yadda yadda yadda........

Okay so with this particualr vocalist, the mkl 2500 with joly mods but stock capsule works better
Than the modded 219 with joly capsule.
Not sure if its the amp or thecapsule but sibliance point is different and more manageable with the 2500.
Could be several reasons none of which matter in the heat of battle.
The singer has a big voice but with some nasty esses.
There is some technique issues with the mouth but in the mean time find the tool
And roll.
Boom

The 219 still sounding awesome on gtr and bass.
We shall see how the set does on the SVT today.

Modified an ampex AM-10 for direct outs.
Rob harvey at world pro audio did the design and mod.
Direct out circuit consists of avedis opamp thru old mci transformers.
Phase and impedeance switches.
Sounds really good.
Nice cleanish big round bottom thr direct out.
The stock crunchier sound is maintained as well with a switch back into mixer.

Direct gtrs sound amazing Crunched thru the mixer

That 500 series moog ladder filter is an amazing tool.
It will really breath life into a kick drum.
Just sweep into the sweet spot and bring it out.
Ii thought it was too expensive until i used it.
