Piano Micing

Hey Rob,

XO has to be my favorite sounding album of all time. You can't beat the production, not to mention the music!

Just a couple questions for you. First, I really enjoy the piano sound on Elliott's songs and was wondering what you would recommend for micing an upright piano? I have a large diaphragm condenser, 2 paired small diaphragm condensers, and an sm57. Any suggestions on which to use, mic placement, and mixing tips?

Also, just curious about the unreleased Elliott song "Dancing on the Highway". Was this recorded during the Figure 8 sessions because the short instrumental plays right after In the Lost and Found. I love the full song and was wondering why Elliott chose to just include the instrumental? It's such a good track! Any info on this one?

Thanks!
Kubo

Dancing on the hiway was turned into a song after the fact.
It started as a piece of music made on the boomerang looper.
Used as a segue.
During the recording of figure eight elliott was making lots of these little musical vignettes.
They helped tie the record together as it was recorded over a span of time in several different studios.

nice.someday I gotta get a second.

my Mohog came..out of the box put it on a room mic.inserted on a bass.
sounds really good.
seems a bit more immediate feel to the "D" which is overall a tad softer more pillowy.
also like the thicker rounder sounding carnill option .

It has a very butter-y effect on vocals, subtle but nice.

Hey Rob, glad you are digging the Mohog pair...I was curious.

Just tried out the bigler audio 500 series mic pre.
Very very nice.
A/B'd to an old 512 i have.
Defintely had a faster transient response.
A really nice natural full bottom and open top.
Then gained it up and saturated the tramsformer it got real cool.

Really liked it alot.

Nice! I always like toms that sound a bit like they are about to explode. The last Refused record comes to mind. Gotta try that on some mixing stuff I've got coming up. Might have to steal a couple units from the burn-in rack!

here is an interesting trick for older cars with no bluetooth or whatever.
get one of those cassette adapters and then hook it up to your smart phone.
put your phone on speaker and viola you now have hands free driving with your phone coming thru your stereo system.

I do that all the time because my car sucks!

Seriously though Rob, that Elliott Smith catalog is very very important to me and you guys did such a great job recording him. I'll be listening to all of those records til the day I die.

Just moved to Silverlake a year ago. Is there any good Chinese food in this neighborhood? Still haven't found some yet...

Obviously, I'm not Rob... But Chinese food in LA is a bit tricky. Chinatown is close to you, some good stuff there. Lots of great places a bit east in Alhambra. Amazing vegetarian place called "Happy Family" (I think). Closer to you, you have more Vietnamese and Thai options. Pho Cafe being my personal favorite.

Welcome to the eastside...
