Nothing interesting.
I think it has to be taken apart some so one can see the frame work and power distro To get the idea.
Maybe next time when there is a break in the action I'll take the stereo buss modules.
Those are definitely sexy.

sorry, electric guitars are just a different world to me. i do my best with an acoustic for now.
I could guess that it was a 60's Gibson 330.......

For that money try a new epiphany casino and drop in some loller P90's.
It will be pretty cool.

ok you're right, that would work for the money. i found out the epiphones have p90s in them already. so this might work. i'll go check it out at a store. see if it sounds close enough.

Upgrading the P90's with the lollars is a proven improvement.......

hey rob, thanks for the advice, i'll try out the guitar and if i like it as is, i'll buy it and definitely add the lollars.

but right now i'm trying to understand why when i listen back to my recordings on headphones they sound fine. but when i play them on my laptop speakers they sound flat... is this just cus my speakers are very bad or did something go wrong somewhere in the process of finishing the songs?

Question

The Vines - Country Yard

What was the vocal chains that were used on this song. There is a lot on that song that seems to be going on vocal wise. I am guessing there is also some type of "autotune" going on?

It's been ten years so I'm not exactly sure but I think it was either a 67 or an 87 with the inner tube audio electronics and a Stephen Paul diaphragm making it not really 87 at all.

API mic pre thru a 3A and an 1176.

Wow I've only just discovered this thread, read pretty much the whole thing!

Just wanted to say that XO is one damn important album to me, and IMO one of the best sounding albums ever made - so much colour all over the place but so dark at the same time - amazing! a big inspiration for me.

I have too many questions right now, so I'll have to have a think and narrow it down =\

That is how I felt but a lot of my questions were answered earlier on. It took me a couple days since the thread goes back to 2006, I was 16 in 2006 so it probably just feels like a long time for me but yes those elliott smith records really touched me in my teenage years. I now live down the street from the Figure 8 wall. The Vines is actually one of the bands responsible for me picking up my first guitar haha

Here for the gear

Marjorie Fair

Rob- I wanted to ask you about Self Help Serenade...I absolutely LOVE the sound of that record. Warm, Lush, yet modern.

I was hoping you could elaborate on the vocal and drum sounds in particular- gear, room, console, etc. I'm assuming Sunset Sound - API?

Also, the mix- there's SO much low end, but it never gets muddy. And the high end- bright, tons of clarity, but NEVER brittle. Do you EQ/COMP the master buss always before going to mastering?

Can you talk about compression techniques specifically used on this record?

I'm mixing ITB (HD2 ACCEL) and using all plugs. I can't get that full, warm, "enveloping" tone. The mixes sound thin, and they lack "girth".

Is the answer simple- CONSOLE? Well, I guess when it comes to mixing, the answer is never simple, but I think you know what I mean.

Last- do you have a room over at Dave T's spot in Atwater? I feel like I have seen you in "my" starbucks from time to time.

Thanks
Luke

i'm shocked that someone(you) actually heard this record.
cool it made its way to you somehow in spite of the record company's efforts to do otherwise...

I was hoping you could elaborate on the vocal and drum sounds in particular- gear, room, console, etc. I'm assuming Sunset Sound - API?

yeah sunset studio 3, API Demedio, studer 800.
i think that was the record when i got the lomo 19A9 and we pretty much used it on all vocals.
i dont think there was anything super unusual going on.
evan is a great gtr player with interesting sounds and has a great voice.
Chris was a very interesting bass player.
joey waronker on drums.
bass was thru an svt or v4b into an 8x10 , sounddelux 195 on the cab.
for the flip top sound we used a 47 a couple of feet back.
guitars were thru all sorts of different combos and heads.

lots of echoplex and digi delays.

Also, the mix- there's SO much low end, but it never gets muddy. And the high end- bright, tons of clarity, but NEVER brittle. Do you EQ/COMP the master buss always before going to mastering?

the record was mixed on a 8078.
probably had the gml eq and C1 on the 2buss
mixed to 1/4" on an ATR.

Can you talk about compression techniques specifically used on this record?

nothing unusual really.
alot of combo 1176-3A going to tape and probably going thru a distressor when comping things t another track.
i wouldnt say anything got super hammered but just kinda leveled.
but there was some compression to taste adventures as well.
things got compressed to tape and compressed when mixed.
not everything but certain things.
and there was definitely parallel drum compression...

I'm mixing ITB (HD2 ACCEL) and using all plugs. I can't get that full, warm, "enveloping" tone. The mixes sound thin, and they lack "girth".

Is the answer simple- CONSOLE? Well, I guess when it comes to mixing, the answer is never simple, but I think you know what I mean.

i like out of the box better, i like transformers and discrete.
its the difference between being on vacation or looking at the pictures of your vacation.

Last- do you have a room over at Dave T's spot in Atwater? I feel like I have seen you in "my" starbucks from time to time.

no i am at the eagle rock compound. and i never go to starbucks....

Besides having great songs, what advice would you give someone that is mainly doing home recording with not very good equipment? Do you have any favorite albums that were basically made for dirt cheap? Thanks in advance

There are lots of records made for cheap.
See most guided by voices records.
They are driven by songs not sonics.
Sometimes the sonics add a chram
Sometimes you wish it could sound better.
We made mellow gold on a mackie 1604 and a fostex A80
For very cheap.
It did not affect sales.

A pair of BAC 500's
A pair of mohogs
A pair of restored 525A's
The DBX 164.
And a recapped refreshed spectrosonics 610
In the rack.
Compression is our friend.
Hardware is good.

Wondering the same thing.

Though I still like the idea of a wider attack range (i.e., slower than superman), doesn't look like they messed with it here...woulda been cool.

When i got the mohogs , we were tracking at sunset sound factory so we compared them to a bunch of blackface 76's.
All the blackfaces sounded different.
There was one that had a real nice low end we used that as a benchmark.
The mohogs didnt have the bottom but were way more in your face.
The urei felt soft or pulled comparatively.
So no real clear definitive favorite.
Would choose one over the other depending on the source....
I do like the carnhill option.
If you got something screaming bright, this will give it a shave.

The purples that i have are way different gain structure wise and are kinda touchy on the input.
They are also brighter.
The mohogs are similiiar in how they set up but arent as bright as the purples that i own. Which i like.
But as i said before everything has its use.
