[QUOTE=SChavez963;1778193]Man this thread has been so informative and pretty damn interesting. I am actually in an audio engineering program down here in TX. I guess it's the new school way of doing things but it's great to hear old gear heads talk.

anyways Rob, if you're still around. I have to ask you a couple things about recording Elliott..

1) was their a specific miking technique you used for his guitars? what are your favorites??

nothing specific.
a platform from which we would start for acoustics was,
finger picking= large diaphragm condenser
strumming = small diaphragm
we would change from there if/ when it didnt sound right.
when we found what sounded right we stuck with it

2) what was the instrumentation for his string and/or orchestral arrangements? How many of each?

XO was a double quartet
figure eight was between 30+ to 60 some odd peice

3) was his tracking order pretty standard or did it just depend on the song?

yes

The API and SSL are right next to each other. My buddy speaks very highly of the vibe and setup there for tracking.

Hey Rob.

Long time no see. I haven't seen you since I immigrated to the United States from Alabama.

I was glad to see Switches finally got a US release. I listened to "Step Kids In Love" just the other day. It's nice to hear the finished mix. I don't remember the piano being that destroyed when you and Doug were working on it. Sounds awesome. What did you do to it?

BTW, sorry to be catching up on a post that's over a year old, but I thought the Verbena vocals were done with one or the other of the RTT mics. (Big Ivan? Little Ivan?) Am I mistaken? Did you see Scott on Conan O'Brien? I missed it. Lester called me as soon as it was over to tell me about it. Nice, huh?

Why on earth would you want to go to Atlanta in the spring/summer to make a record? High frequencies moving a little too fast for you here in L.A.? I'm sure 100% humidity can be simulated with EQ.

Not enough Starbucks and Applebees in your diet?

Cheers,
DF

hey daniel
lester told me you moved out but saw no signs ofyou actually truly existing out here.
anyways, yeah the switches finally came out and what do you know, its not getting any love.
the paino definitely got crunched real good between some nasty cmpression and a sansamp.

i remember verbena vocals being little ivan which is the lomo 19A9.
the RTT is big ivan AKA the MKL101.

i heard scott was gonna be one conan but i guess it didnt know when since i missed it.
damn.

and trust me going to atlanta is definitely not high on my list of things to do this summer.
but if thats what i gotta do to make this record i wanna make thats what i'm gonna have to do.

where are you at downtown someplace?
i just built a little room myself.
its not quite on the air but its almost there.

alright sleep is calling my name.

I guess I had thought of "little Ivan" as being the MKL102. I didn't realize it was the 19a9. Don't you also have an MKL102 or just the 101?

Have you ever put another head on the 101 besides the linsa that comes with it?

Sorry to hear that Switches haven't been given the keys to the money hose. But are they turning on the money hose for anyone these days, now that promo runs the labels?

Yes, I'm downtown, which I love. But I'm not thrilled with the space. It really only functions well as a mix/overdub room, which sucks. It's just not large enough to do so many of the things I've become accustomed to, so I may look for a new space when my current lease is up.

I'd love to see your new room.

i have the 19A9 the mkl 101 the MK13?
(looks like cross between a 414 and an electric razor)
havent tried any other heads on the 101.
didnt know you could easily do that.

the switches have been getting support from the label it just isnt going at radio.
etc etc so its not really happening.
which is always a drag.
once the room is up and running you should come by for a visit.
it aint exactly big and spacious either.
but at least it co$t me alot.

I read a rough translation from a German review over at some other board where the guy used an M7 and a CK12 on the MKL101 with what he described as great results.

Maybe not "easily," but apparently it can be and is being done somewhere by someone.

If you like, I'll try to dig up the review.
