Did you do any training? I think there are free Government run courses nowadays, and they offer startups for small businesses.

what I do

Retired from the rat race now.

Five years ago I owned a small IT healthcare software firm. We developed medical systems (PMS. HIPAA, EMR and EDR) systems. I was able to irritate a large medical software supplier by taking their customers with better software that they made me an offer and I sold my company.

Was able to pay everything off and have enough to live my life out on. Now I write and record music, play really bad golf and spend time with my family.

I make corrugated boxes. Nothing feels better then getting papercuts all day long then coming home, strapping on the guitar, hitting record and letting a string slide right through a fresh papercut. After a few months it will stop bringing a tear to your eye :p

I don't know about musicians on gearsluts. I produce and mix for a living and some of the bands I work with make there living doing it as well. It's hard but not impossible.

Why'd you quit if it was part-time? Best piece of advice is don't quit your day job til you can afford it.

it was minimum wage. the money I was making almost half of it i was spending on gas to get to and from work.

it was after-noon till around 8pm. after work didn't have enthusiasm or energy to work with music. I tried working with music in the 'morning' which didn't work out, i was checking time often and thinking about that I have to go to work.. and you guys know how thinking about something else while trying to work on music doesn't lead to satisfying results.

Not true in my case. My commercial studio did quite well and I had a manager running it. It was just that I could make 5 times the money with my IT software business.

My reason for having a studio was having a place to work at away from home. The original intention was just to have it pay for itself but in reality it was quite profitable. So like any good entrepreneur I sold it at an advantageous time and built a nice 1500 sqft studio on the few acres I lived on.

Now that I have sold my IT business life is .

Media Marketing Production (tv and radio commercials by contract)
Plus, engineering. Its nice because if my music slate fills up, I can ease up on commercial work, if it gets slow, ill pick up a few commercial jobs. Usually, a win-win.
