I run major account sales and regional business operations for a nifty cloud-based software company. I live in the Chicago area, but spend a lot of time working from San Francisco and Boston.

I've been in this particular industry since college (30+ years) so I get to mentor a lot of younger people, which I absolutely love. I also travel quite a bit around the US, and I enjoy that too, although it takes me away from my wife, my cats, and my keyboards.

I feel your pain, I really do.

In 2008 I got laid off from a company where I'd worked for 18 years. I was painfully out of work for a year and a half during the depths of the recession. I finally got a job I could tolerate while looking for something more preferable, and landed a much better gig last year.

Most people complain about their job from time to time, but for me nothing was more hurtful than being out of work.

Anyhow, good luck. Something will come around - it always does, and then you'll be off on another adventure.

I used to be a tanning specialist at a tanning salon, and now I work in a microbiology lab at my university.

And I encounter roughly the same amount of feces at both jobs.

I work as a Windows platform developer evangelist at Microsoft corporate. I work from home near DC, but travel to our corporate office in WA quite a bit.

I speak at events, write books, blog, train, and generally try to help developers do well on our platform.

Your disclaimer sounds like things we said when I worked for a "propaganda" office in the Army.

I was supposed to make journalists believe that a tank was doing ambulance service when it accidentaly ran over a kid. At the same time, I hated the journalists, I hated the lie, and people hated me no matter how many lies I told. And somebody ordered me to "go on lying until they stop hating us".

Feel your pain, dude.

I avoided psychosis [did I? ] by getting back to the less stressful job of manning a gun.

Nothing so nefarious. Well, at least I don't currently have plans to run anyone over

It's a legal and ethical transparency thing. Same thing I have on my blog so folks know who I'm working for in advance.

Ex Aircraft Engineer of 20 years, was in the Air Force for 10 of those.

Have recently tried offshore work as a Subsea Engineer and pretty much hated every nano-second of it, now bumbling along doing mechanical fitter work locally. zzzzzz......

Still, it's nice being at home all the time.

Nice. My father-in-law was an aeronautical engineer working for the Air Force in Dayton for decades--crazy work, that.

Being a dad is the best job ever, and it just keeps getting better and better.

But to pay the bills I work at Canada's tax agency- the IRS for you in the U.S. and Inland Revenue for you in the U.K. I started as an income tax auditor and hated it. Now I'm a financial analyst and explain changes in monthly/annual tax revenues. It's very interesting if you're into economics and really really big numbers.

Full time code monkey (aka software eng), mostly Java, dabble with iOS, would love to write tablet / phone apps but integrating back-office systems pays the bills.

Dad duties at home too, which I agree is the best job ever, especially when I get to show the young'ns (a boy & a girl) new toys like the Machinedrum.
