Well, I'm not saying its right or sane! Things are bizarre over here. To be honest--the best solution is a tazer. w/advent of tazers there's no real need to go around plugging people.

I'm not sure what the chances are of an thief being armed in EU, it seems like guns are not as big a thing over there. In general, in the south USA, the probability of a home invasion turning violent is pretty high. It really is a different world.

Sound Designer / Dialogue Editor / Film Mixer. Mostly for documentaries. So I spend a lot of time reading this forum and the post production one. It's Pro Tools all day at work, then Ableton all night for music production.

I just worked on a really interesting one about how natural gas drilling often contaminates the surrounding water supply, everyone should see it, if only to see the water from people's faucets literally catch on fire: GASLAND

Love to all the gearslutz, I have learned so much from the good people here

Absolutely. Its a whole different culture - even though the Swiss are armed to the teeth (approx 45% of population, which is by far the highest in the world), you almost have no homicides, or murders a la Americano. Makes you think whether its an education or values system that failed somewhere... Or (to play D.A.) there actually arent enough guns in the US to calm everybody the hell down, as it would ensure an almost 100% certainty you will be shot......

While I'm obviously an advocate of armed self-defense, I don't condone the killing of unarmed burglars. However, in a way I'm glad there are people insane enough to kill others for merely stepping inside their home uninvited. This makes all the prospective burglars think twice before stepping into mine.

If I ever came home and some unarmed person was trying to steal my gear..... well.... Has anyone ever seen the movie Tin Men? I'd probably do what Danny DeVito did to Richard Dreyfuss.

ha. we're just a collection of pyschopaths, no fixing that! heh

btw americans have 90 guns for every 100 citizens, for those keeping score.

nice work Don! Over here sometimes I think the civil engineers were drunk. In boston, it's almost a safe bet they were.

It's not just in the states - I live in the south of France. Home-jacking on the rise, burgulary is rampant, bars on all of the windows. Increasingly the criminals are armed and very violent.

It's everywhere, well not everywhere. I was in Singapore last year. Clean, safe. I asked about graffit - I didn't see any. My friend (native of Sinagpore) just laughed ..she said - they may do it once - but that will be the last time.

Let's face it - open, relatively free society - growing inequities. The have nots and the have nothings - have nothing to lose. Nothing. You're just in the way...
You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

Miami Beach Firefighter here. Also, currently in paramedic school. I have the best career in the world, in one of the best cities in the world... God is good!

I used to DJ for a living. I toured for a number of years, did radio and nightclubs. It was great while I was young and single. Funny how your outlook on life changes as you mature. Now, here I am 10 years later married with children, a wonderfully fulfilling career, a production company, and recording studio. Again I say...God is good!

I think that people who live outside the US don't realise that alot of this country is actually dangerous, and not carrying a weapon just leaves you vulnerable. The cops don't always come when you call, and that's the truth. Which reminds me, where I grew up the nearest police station was 2 towns away, and you would see lots of signs on people's property stating "tresspassers will be shot".

To stay on topic though, Being a DJ at a strip club sounds like an awesome job!

Full time musician and have been since I was 15, 38 years and going strong.
Sadly the money is lower and the hours longer when you lose management, but if you love what you're doing who's counting...?

And as far as guns go.
I have never needed to shoot anyone, but as a boy we fended off the looters and angry mob of Brotha's by shooting 5 Gallon jugs of Gasoline under the Viaducts to discourage further breeching. ( During the burning of St.Louis when MLK was assasinated )
I am an avid outdoorsmen and hunt Elk once a year as the Sierra Nevada if full of the noble beasts, and I have meat for an entire year.
Also..........the Police cannot protect you.
They can however come over and clean up the mess once you get killed from not having a quality saw'doff nearby.....

And the man in Miami is a hero. Music and Fireman....that's awesome Bro.
I played there many times as a kid in the late '70's at Les Jardin and Coral Gables' own U of M. The smell of Orange Blossoms can only be compared to Heaven....

Hi Y'all!

I will keep this strictly about jobs/work. lol

Added this week:

HD Camera operator.

"Mastering" Engineer. (actually remastering 2 albums and 1 new album)

Pretty cool week actually, more to come next week i'm sure.

I just wanted to say to the OP: This is actually a very POSITIVE thread.

We need more good stories, just like the evening news needs up lifting human oriented stories.

Hearing about more of my brothers in arms (ok, pun intended...) doing great in this very uncertain time for global economy gives me hope for our industry.

Here's to more success stories, keep em' coming....

I worked for 11 years in the call centre industry, most recently as a project coordinator. But I quit my job 2 months ago and promised myself never again will I work in a call centre. I'd be happy never to sit in an office ever again. I actually plan on learning a trade.

OP how is it being a locksmith? Apprenticeships don't come up very often but it seems like it's a bit more interesting than some other trades.

OT: Since it's been mentioned re: guns. I fully support those of you in the US who exercise your constitutional rights. Please keep doing so. Once America falls, the rest of the world is ****ed. Down with the NWO.

Yeah its alright its the only thing ive ever done so im really keen to get out of it and do something else. Its good in the sense that you arent on the one job site all day and it keeps it fairly interesting.
Down side is you have to deal with alot of paranoid people regarding their security. Also alot of people think its not a real trade because they can swap over a knobset themselves and cutting keys looks easy. Alot of people think we dont really do anything else.
Due to this we cant charge as much for labour as say an electrician or a plumber. Also the base wage for a locksmith is 550 AUD which i think is pretty poor.
Im lucky in that fact that i own a part of the buisness with my parents so i get good money. But part of that is another reason why i want to get out of it....working with family can be torture

And they can hold you for as long as they want. All this possible by the new post 9/11 law.
