The usual job description is "rounder-upper of money."

Most of the time he was there because

1. He owned a PA;
2. He owned a van; or
3. He was paying for recording the demo.

Usually, the other guitarist would sidle up and quietly inform me that "that's meant to be sort of a background guitar. don't put it too high in the mix."
4. He is the brother of another band member

Not for a recording session, but during the filming of a music video:

We brought out a bunch of motorcycles to film with the artist... a 100k Ducati race bike, a turbo zx14r, a busa, and a bunch of custom Softails.

The artist wanted a shot of one of the models riding off on the back of a bike.

We tried educating the model, explaining the legal stuf and had waivers signed... we explicitly told everyone not to touch the bikes without supervision and permission.

The artist does the usual posing shots, laying on bikes, singing and rapping shots, etc. then we get to the stunt part...

We packed up the vans and relocated to a park where we had permission to film.

Stunting, wheelies, stoppies, burnouts, etc...

The artist decided to not listen to us, jump on an idling bike, and crash it into a fence.

She didn’t need an ambulance but was very shaken up and got some bad road rash.

She starts throwing a fit and demands we reimburse her and tells us that she doesn’t want to work with us any more, because “ I changed my mind about the bike idea.”

Yesterday a new singer was in the studio and tells me, I can’t wait to sound like Bruno mars.. I was like cool, do you sound like him? “Artist” no but with all these big “machines and equipment” I know I will sound like him... what setting is Bruno Mars setting on all this equipment... I thought it was a joke but he was dead serious. And he sounded more like Mr Bean...

He directed the majority of the Ruff Ryders’s videos in the late 90s early 00s beginning with Ruff Ryders Anthem

Ah.

We weren’t going for the rr / biker boys vibe here.

There is a RR event in the Bronx this week btw. I don’t think that info is on the net but ask around. We’ll be there.

"$xxxx is too much, I don't have that kind of money. I just want to sound like Michael Jackson "

I'm like...you have no idea how much money went into MJ recordings....

Filming live stage on 30k people festival. Big shot producer from big shot artist come during pause on stage pointing at everyone: "If you don't have to be here, get out!"

And we did. Already been working for 6-7 hours that day. It was great to finally stretch, have swim and beer while watching from distance how the producer is running in circles panicking why there is nobody doing the filming.

Were they the kind of earbuds that only work with music?

Only got to experience engineering in a "professional" setting briefly, small RAP studio in Sacramento. Recording a song called "My ESCALADE" hook goes like this:

MY ESCALADE;
MY ESCALADE-
GOT LAID IN MY ESCALADE

after the session, the rapper is asking studio owner for a ride home.

I thought he was asking could other people in the building hear him. It’s a big building. We’re the only studio. Thought it was a copyright or stage fright thing.

A rapper heard me mixing another artist’s track and got mad because he liked the artist’s instrumental better than the one I made for him.

He demanded we use the other artist’s instrumental and re-record everything with it or else he wasn’t “feeling this spot” any more.

I explained that we don’t do business this way. He walked out really pissed off and called me later last night to tell me we don’t believe in him as an artist and that we are playing him.

Kind of sad cause I want all my artists to feel like I’m invested in their music and careers. Guy was kind of a brat about it though.

People like that never succeed because they never grow, they just spend their lives blaming everyone around them when things don’t work out. You lost some money, but you dodged a torrential downpour of crap that you would have had to deal with on a daily basis from that guy. Nothing you ever do will be good enough for someone like that. You’re absolutely right, what a brat...

Hahaha.

The number of sessions I did in London when just starting to engineer...recording hip hop vocals all about how much money they have, how everyone knows them in the club, how they “run the roads”....and then at the end of the session watching 4 guys scrabble to find £250 between them so they can take their mix with them...

In Texas, it's the country guys singing about their big trucks and country life. Finish up the session and they walk out in the shiniest pair of boots you're ever seen and climb into their Prius:

"Ya brother, the mileage on these are just so good and the carbon emissions on my old truck were so bad. I just want to do my part, you know?"

It's a new breed of cowboy out there! Nothing against trying to "do better", but I'm going to laugh at your lyrics...

Not really stupid, just a funny moment.

A friend of mine has a studio. He's running an AVID HD system but he also has a bunch of older stuff like a pair of Yamaha O1v boards, some old reverbs and synths and what not. So we're hanging out one at his place listening to a couple of songs I mastered for one of his clients, when he says to me, "If anything happens to me, you can have my gear."

I looked around the room and said, "How am I gonna get all this to an antique shop?"

We rag on each other so he took it the right way.
