IMO its absolutely impossible to remove subjectivity from listening to music. The 12 tone scale itself is an exercise in mass subjectivity, there's nothing objective about it at all (as demonstrated by all the cultures that were not exposed to it, not using it. Its not inherant to anything at all, 12-tone is just a preset frequency division standard we've all chosen to buy into.)

You can, however, expand the scope of your subjective tastes considerably through education. IE open minded investigative exposure to new things.

The more you expose yourself to from an open minded investigative educational perspective, the more you can genuinely appreciate and enjoy. The more you slip into "quickly judge by what I already know" mode, the less you can genuinely appreciate and enjoy in life. Up to the individual person how they prefer to approach new things in life.

I don't disagree, but I'd suggest to those who don't listen to "traditional Indonesian music" to check out the fantastic Balinese gamelan record Golden Rain. A longtime favorite of mine.
