RIP - Michael Banton Jones

Hey guys,

I'm sad to inform of the passing of a truly great recording engineer and a personal mentor of mine, Mr. Michael Banton-Jones. Originally working out of the original Decca Records in North England in the 1970's, Michael moved to Canada. Here he worked on many famous albums and film scoring sessions, earning him 34 gold and platinum albums, 3 Gemini awards, and a Juno award.

I personally met Mike while working together at Metalworks Recording Studios in Toronto, and was immediately drawn to his witty character. A true "gentleman", Mike was admired for both his kind heart, and passion for audio. Mike served as a mentor for myself, and many of his colleges. I remember working on a large orchestral session with Mike at the CBC and listening to him push up the faders for the first time after some careful mic placement, and being totally blown away by the soundstage. He made it seem effortless.

Michael will be greatly missed by both his family, and his friends in the audio industry. May he rest in peace.

A memorial service for Mike is in the planning, probably sometime in early February in Toronto.
I'll post the info when it becomes available for those who may wish to attend.

Photos of Michael Banton Jones

Hi - I've just learned about Mike's death in 2014. Our band (Doug & the Slugs)
is having a 40th anniversary show next week, and we'd like to include some photos of Mike in a retrospective slide show. We don't have any photos in our archive, although Mike was a huge part of our early recording career - recording and/or mixing 3 albums for us in the 1980's. Please send any photos/links
to [email protected]

thanks, Simon
