New Allen & Heath Academy Now in Session

Allen & Heath Academy Now in Session

Nationwide training and certification program offers intensive audio training classes

Introduced in February with its first classes in Van Nuys, California, Allen & Heath Academy offers attendees formal training spreading across a broad range of Allen & Heath products as well as live sound practices in general. Presented by Allen & Heath USA in cooperation with its regional network of independent sales representatives all across the country, the workshops are based around in-person academy training as well as online testing, all of which lead to official certification and AVIXA CTS RUs.

We’ve intentionally given this program some real depth in terms of its size, scope, and content,” Allen & Heath USA Marketing Manager Jeff Hawley said. “It’s all part of our company efforts to advance the entire industry’s knowledge base not only on dLive and our other trendsetting products, but on new ways of thinking about workflow and networked systems in general.”

Skilled audio professionals and legendary touring sound veterans are leading dozens of academy sessions that have already attracted hundreds of attendees this season. Notable among the group is featured presenter Michael Bangs, whose 20+ year career includes experiences as a monitor engineer and production manager for A-list acts including Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Katy Perry, Tom Petty, Kid Rock, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. An early advocate of live digital mixing, Bangs assisted a multitude of others in making the transition from analog in the early 2000s. A pioneer in surfaceless mixing that naturally gravitated to Allen & Heath, he built a close relationship with the manufacturer and ultimately joined the company to provide support to those on the road using dLive mixing systems.

“Being part of the Allen & Heath Academy offers me the unique opportunity to meet and work with some of the brightest engineers in our industry,” Bangs said, commenting upon his role within the training initiative. “We have a lot to offer everyone with these classes beyond simple certification—this is a chance for anyone who’s serious about their work and career to truly expand their skills, learn new techniques, and strike a creative spark within themselves and among their peers.”

Beyond touring FOH and monitor engineers, consultants, integrators, house of worship production team members, and those within the rental community, all stand to gain by enrolling for academy sessions. Most sessions are free to attend. To obtain Allen & Heath Academy dates and locations as well as all other registration details, visit: http://bit.ly/allenheathacademy.

New Bob Moog’s Archives on Display at Cornell University

Bob Moog’s Archives on Display at Cornell University

Drawing from Cornell’s rich archive of materials that traces Moog’s lifelong fascination with electricity and its musical possibilities, this exhibition features instrument prototypes, design schematics, photographs, correspondence, and audio recordings. It also provides viewers with an opportunity to play a theremin and Minimoog supplied by Moog Music Inc.

Highlights include documents from Moog’s years studying at Cornell University, running his first synthesizer factory in Trumansburg, New York, and collaborating with composers and recording artists for whom he created personalized systems, including Wendy Carlos, who popularized the Moog synthesizer with the album Switched-On Bach; Keith Emerson of the progressive rock band Emerson, Lake, and Palmer; and jazz musician Eddie Harris.

Electrifying Music is a collaboration among Cornell University’s Department of Music, Department of Science and Technology Studies, and Cornell University Library’s Division of Rare and Manuscript Collections.

Exhibition curators: Judith Peraino (Music), Trevor Pinch (Science and Technology Studies), Roger Moseley (Music).

This exhibition is funded through the generous support of the Stephen E. ’58, MBA ’59 and Evalyn Edwards ’60 Milman Exhibition Fund, with additional contributions from Moog Music Inc.

Synthesizer enthusiasts from around the world will gather together in Ithaca, New York later this week to take part in the unveiling of Bob Moog’s official archives.

Treasured relics from Moog’s early days of electronic music discovery have been kept safe at his alma mater, Cornell University, since 2013—and are now ready to be showcased after years of meticulous cataloging and curation. The collection generously donated by his wife, Dr. Ileana Grams-Moog, includes academic works, early circuit drawings and diagrams, Moog’s own soldering iron, and synthesizer module prototypes. Starting March 6th, 2020, all of this will be on display and open to the public at Cornell’s Carl A. Kroch Library.

To kick off the exhibit honoring Bob Moog’s lifetime of achievements and contributions to science, music, and technology, the university is hosting “When Machines Rock: A Celebration of Robert Moog and Electronic Music” March 5th–7th, which will feature on- and off-campus panels, lectures, concerts, and workshops.

Among the event’s distinguished guests are renowned synthpop and electro-industrial artist Gary Numan, five-time Grammy-nominated electronic music composer and synth pioneer Suzanne Ciani, and Moog synthesizer co-inventor Herb Deutsch. As part of Saturday’s programming, Deutsch will join Moog Music President Mike Adams and Senior Hardware Engineer (and student of Bob Moog) Steve Dunnington to discuss the evolution of analog sound in celebration of more than 60 years of Moog instruments and innovation.

New ContinuuCon Electronic Music Conference [Portugal]

ContinuuCon Electronic Music Conference Scheduled in Portugal

ContinuuCon 2020, the fifth annual international Haken Continuum Conference, will take place on April 27–29 in Palmela, Portugal. Musicians and technologists describe the Haken Continuum as the world’s most uniquely expressive electronic musical instrument. As in previous years, ContinuuCon 2020 will extend an opportunity for Continuum players, sound designers, software developers, and electronic music enthusiasts to explore the Continuum Fingerboard and ContinuuMini through performances, workshops, lectures, and more.

University of Illinois professor Dr. Lippold Haken and Canadian film and TV composer Edmund Eagan developed the Continuum, the ContinuuMini, and their internal sound engine, the Eagan Matrix, over decades of collaboration. Both men will be on hand throughout the event and will be joined by numerous other authorities to share their knowledge and musical expertise.

On April 27, just two days after Superbooth ends in Berlin, the conference will begin with a reception for attendees followed by a public concert at the Theatre S.Joao in Palmela. For the next two days, Continuum experts and master musicians will give presentations and demos at the Palmela Public Library. In addition, Expressive E will give us a sneak peak at their remarkable Osmose synthesizer, which also incorporates the Eagan Matrix. For tickets, more information, and videos of past events, visit us on the web at www.continuucon.com.

Previous Continuum Conferences have been held at IRCAM in Paris, France, and at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, NC. Well-known Continuum players include Game of Thrones composer Ramin Djawadi, Brazilian electro-acoustic musician Amon Tobin, film composer A.R. Rahman, Dream Theater keyboardist Jordan Rudess, and The Who’s Pete Townshend, who said, “I absolutely adore it. It’s a superbly expressive instrument. The Continuum is already inspiring me to new ideas.”

New WAM announces third annual benefit concert

WAM ANNOUNCES THIRD ANNUAL BENEFIT CONCERT WITH ARTIST TUNE-YARDS

Women’s Audio Mission (WAM), a nonprofit that advances women, girls and gender non-conforming (GNC) individuals in music production and the recording arts, announces its third annual Benefit Concert to be held on Wednesday, April 29th at The Independent in San Francisco and featuring the artist Tune-Yards. The popular event draws over 350 attendees and features an action-packed live auction, exclusive VIP reception, and performances by exceptional women artists, all in support of WAM’s mission to change the face of sound and amplify women’s voices.

New England native-turned Oakland resident, Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards headlines the benefit concert. Since 2006 the band has become synonymous with forward movement—whether because of the group's explosive performance style, the always-surprising way in which their songs unfold, the danceability of the music, or the connections Garbus highlights between song and social consciousness. Tune-Yards has collaborated with Yoko Ono, Laurie Anderson, David Byrne, Mavis Staples, and others, and recently scored Boots Riley’s acclaimed film, Sorry to Bother You. Rolling Stone hailed their latest record, I can feel you creep into my private life, as “an LP determined to conjure kinetic joy while staring down our present cultural fright show.”

“WAM is thrilled to host our 2020 Benefit Concert at the iconic SF music venue The Independent with the amazing artist Tune-Yards!” said WAM Executive Director Terri Winston. “Events like this allow us to bring our community together to help support our goal of expanding our training programs to inspire over 3,000 under-served women, girls and gender non-conforming individuals this year to become tomorrow’s music producers and recording engineers.”

WAM’s training programs, which serve over 2,500 women/girls/GNC individuals every year, address the chronic lack of women in the audio industry - less than 5% of the people creating all of the sounds and messages in the constant soundtrack of our lives are women. Over the past two years, WAM’s transformative programs have spread nationally – the organization hosted six successful, sold-out recording arts conferences in Nashville, Los Angeles, New York and Boston, which served over 800 women, and featured industry giants like Linda Perry (Dolly Parton, P!nk), Emily Lazar (David Bowie, Beck), and more.
