Well it has 4 oscillators per patch. And it has a unison mode where you can set any number of voices per note and detune them.
the user guide is available here.

Modal 002.
Had the Solaris. Returned it due to bugs that has yet to be fixed. Most of them has to do with daw integration and John wrote me a couple of weeks ago that it's going to take some time until they get to it. Probably a year from now. And i returned it 3 years ago...
With the money from that i bought the Omega 8 which i'm very happy with.
And this month i got the 002. Very pleased with it. Incredible sound. I encountered a couple of bugs and they already worked on a beta os update with fixes which they are trying now. So there.

Very different sound (from demos).

I prefer the Solaris (for a DIGITAL synth)

(but of course I'd be happy with a 002).

Something about the 002 filter doesn't work for me, including the 008.

Just my opinion.

One of the things that I'd like to hear is better demos of this hi fi sound. I don't know if that's even possible given internet audio compression, but. For example on the 002 some mojo seems to be missing to me compared to say a VS or PPG. With the Solaris, it's the opposite. I'm never sure from demos quite what character I'm hearing.

I'm still shooting for a 2017 Solaris purchase. All my money is sunk into my studio build currently, but I cannot wait to get my hands on one by the middle of next year.

The Modal demos have not impressed me one bit, but I'm sure if I had one in front of me I may change my mind about them.

Now there's a difficult question!

It's a hard choice because they're very different.
They can both do very analogue and hybrid sounds but even then they have a different sound.
They can both do crunchy digital but again it's a different sound.

Solaris has mind boggling modulation and routing flexibility - and that's on top of all the different oscillator, wavetables and filter types it has.

The 002 doesn't have this level of flexibility, but 50 waves and a variable filter is no slouch, it can do a very wide of sounds.

Sound wise I'm inclined to think the 002 has the edge, it has a bit more bite and I like that. Solaris is a bit more mellow. OTOH I haven't really tried to push the Solaris.

OTOH Solaris can do sounds the 002 can't. You can get some very nice Oberheim and Prophet type sounds out of it, and lots of other weird stuff.

So, it's a difficult question.
You can't really go wrong with either ...but both is better .

Just a "heads up". John mentions on his website he will not be making any Solaris's in 2017. He is moving fabrication from Germany to the USA. You might email him for more details.

I would pick the Solaris, because it has pitch/mod wheels.

I went with an 002, I could easily demo it, Modals customer support, speed of os fixes and wonderful sound convinced me. I like the joy stick

Here for the gear

Hello, Now that NAMM 2017 has passed. Has anyones opinions on the JB Solaris changed? If one had the opportunity to purchase this Synth would you still recommend it?
I am on the fence, there are many pros to the synth but the lack of a software editor, and the lack of firmware updates and the price sure makes me hesitate.

Solaris and your favorite Softsynths is all you need.
I've been using SoLarry live since 2011 and only recently got frustrated when using MIDI In with a VR Hardware+App.
Tried USB and DAW, no joy.
Then a few days all was fixed.

But a feature was added to bypass my needs for MIDI In, even though it works.
The Ribbbon controller now sends CC# so Zebra2 HZ and Omnisphere can be controlled.
Joystick, aftertouch, all of it works now.

My sympathies to anyone that sold theirs.

Brave new world for a synth with big sounds...

Yup. It's a great controller.
Just wait until John gets some of those knobs sending CC#.

It's great, but it hasn't replaced my Avalon, prophet 6, modal 002, elements, eurorack, or grp a4. All those offer something different or special for an otb rig.
