No problem! You're welcome. It's going to take some time though, as i'm on the second batch.
Btw, i remember you considered replacing the sem pro with the boomstar sem. After listening to the demos - i think they sound quite different.

awesome. i think it will quench your thirst for something inherently moog-ish. as someone mentioned earlier, i feel that of all the sml analogs on the market lately, these boxes are defintiely biggest and most liquid sounding.

enjoy

I agree, and I don't think I'll be parting with my SEM anytime soon, still love it. However, they managed to cram so much into the Boomstar, and the SEM is so basic and simplistic in comparison, it's making me a little jealous. Thanks god I have the patch panel, I've been expanding the sound possibilities with that.
Anyway, it will be interesting to hear them side by side.

first impressions

My Boomstar arrived today. I opted for the 4075 version mainly because I already have a 303 and a MiniMoog.

Summary - drop everything and buy one right now. This box is amazingly fun to tweak.

Basics - oscillator shapes sound great with the filter wide open. The sub adds a nice low punch. The filter sounds good to my ears, but I'm not commenting whether it nails the ARP sound or not. Basically I don't care. It does the things it is supposed to do - cutoff and resonance are pleasing and interact well with the modulation sources.

(edit #1) - in case it wasn't clear - the core sound is awesome. VCOs and filter are solid, pleasant, and pack a punch even without overdrive or feedback. I had a simple sequence running while I was tweaking and even C-E-G across a couple octaves came alive.

What's especially cool:

loop and invert on Env 1. Do this - loop the envelope, route it to mod VCO 2 frequency. Set A/D/S/R all to zero. Slowly bring up the decay a bit then play around with the sustain knob. Sounds chaotic - now flip the oscillator sync switch.

LFO rate has a nice range and a great selection of waveforms.

Env 2 can be triggered by the LFO - very nice. It's good to see designers paying attention to AM possibilities rather than just the standard filter mod.
(edit #1) - the options for master (to free up the other envelope) and drone are the exact small touches that get a lot of functionality into a standard configuration and give the user more useful options to control the sound.

The feedback and ring mod do good things to the overall sound.
(edit #1) - they can go from a subtle thickening to a full onslaught of noise/distortion.

(edit #1) - Noise and glide are simple but they also are very useful and it's good they are there, whether you use them a lot or not much.

The knobs and switches have a great feel to them. The layout and switches really lend themselves to playing this as an instrument. My suggestion is to put this someplace where you'll easily be able to reach the controls. I can definitely see people rocking these things live like they used to do with the 303's back in the day.

Other quick notes - I was triggering it from MIDI and it was as fast as my TB-303 being triggered from cv/gate by the same sequencer with parallel sequences playing (Cirklon). Haven't done any cv/gate testing yet.

The box is small, but there's room for my large fingers to get to knobs and switches without inadvertently bumping something else.

Very small wishlist - power switch, white indicators on the small knobs across the bottom. Sometimes with a lot going on it's hard to tell if feedback, ring mod, or something else is contributing to the sound and needs adjusting. Like I said - very small list and if I really care, I can put a dot of nail polish or paint on the knobs. Right now, it's a ton of fun in a small box.

I had an SE-1x for a while and even though I really liked the sound, the menus were a buzzkill. This box is perfect in the balance between amount of functionality and ease of use. Like other manufacturers found out - take a great sounding core, add the ability to modulate the core in different ways, and allow the modulations to interact in unexpected ways and you end up with a winner.

All I can say to the previous posters on the prior 46 pages is to try one in person before knocking the featureset.

Will I end up buying a second box? Maybe, maybe not. We'll see if the glow wears off after a while. Do you need at least one? Definitely. Does it really matter which filter you get? If you have a lot of other gear, I'd say no. If you really want something *in the particular style of* ARP/Moog/Roland/Oberheim, then yes, maybe it matters.

It's really the rest of the box that makes it special.

Man, the SEM sounds gorgeous. Boomstars for GAS President! I have a patch panel SEM and am definitely right on the line now. Very different sounds, but man so sick. Still definitely picking up 4075. What a great year for analogs!

I saw oldgearguy's post linked on Facebook: small tip for any of the SE folks - if you click the number in the right top corner of the post, you see just the post by itself. That way people won't have to scroll anywhere, and you can still return to the main thread easily.

How do the small knobs on the mixer section feel like? Are they sturdy or wobbly?

They are surprisingly sturdy and responsive. It's the first time I'm using such diminutive knobs and I'm pleasantly surprised. I've read some people voicing criticism at the same knobs as used in Korg Volcas, but judging from how they work in this 5089, I'm sold.

One thing though, all knobs need a white mark to highlight the centre of the knob. In fact, that's what I will do to my Boomstar.

I have to say that the amount of modulations they've packed into this baby is very good. It's a deep synth, no doubt about that.

Here's my white 4075. Form factor is like a smaller SEM as far as how it's angled and such.

niceeeeeeee. i'm positively jealous. i dont neceserily need one, but am GASing to no end....

first i was crazy for 4075, but now i actually dig 3003 and 5089 more. after using SE1X for a while, i always liked SE take on moog sound, even next to minimoogs n such. i call it juicy and liquidy..

and its hilarious how sexy and punchy their 3003 sounds... 303ish but so versatile.. with so many options for dirt as well. god given for fast sequences arpeggiators...any electronic music with a fast bpm.

hmmhm what to sell.. what to sell...

uh oh Im GASing again....

Ive got to be honest and say Ive not been crazy about the demos tho...the recent SEM one sounded best...

They sounded more like an ATC and I preferred the tone of the SE1x....

I like the featureset and form of them - but at times preferred the Dominion X sound...

mmm

would be really cool to hear some simple sounds, basses and leads - where you can hear the basic tone...a lot of the demos are quite mental...

It would be nice if himalaya could accommodate with some demos. Based on his preset libraries, I know he knows how to make an analog monosynth sing.
