Amon Tobin and Flying Lotus have a lot of similarities

[Because I'm a nerd and spend time thinking about this when I'm not making music...]

•Both produce wildly experimental hip-hop deviations, or at least started out from that angle

•Both began with a passion for art in a visual medium (Amon was a photography student, Flying Lotus a film student)

•Both love their weed

•Both currently reside in California

•Both take prominent samples from Martin Denny, Isao Tomita, and similar jazz records

•Both are the only artists I've heard to date who use the "Watch 'n Chain" break (Amon's "Saboteur", FlyLo's "Camel")

•Both have made prominent use of a string quartet in their "cleanest"-sounding record (Amon's "Foley Room" and FlyLo's "Cosmogramma")

•Both have deviated from samples and used a trusted musician for bass in particular (Nacho Mendez on "Chaos Theory" and Thundercat on "Cosmogramma")

I'll post more when I remember them. Just thought I'd share my nerdy insights for the day.

No actually some of us don't.

I really can't be doing with people equating music and drugs.

As I was saying to my friend Geoffrey the other night at a vegan crunk night, If people need substances to enjoy music they are not really into the music, and it must be very poor music indeed. Englebert Humpandink didn't smoke doobies and neither do his fans or showaddywaddy for that matter. I dance all night to bucks-fizz and I never touched a doobie in my life! Three cans of carlsberg and I'm a party riot.

With all due respect I haven't touched weed in months and I've never bought it, just smoked with friends. And usually when I do music all sounds like weird nursery rhymes anyway.

Also, alcohol is a drug the same as weed so you're in the same boat as the people you slam.

Just some food for thought.

I love both artists regardless of any buzz I may or may not be experiencing.
