Studio Electronics / Nova Musik CODE (gear porn)

Well, it finally arrived after taking a month to put in 2 extra voice cards for me. Its only a 6 voice right now, but I plan to upgrade to the full 8 also with the CS80 filter and the new Flanger filter when its available in the Autumn.

I thought some of you might appreciate some pics of the unit....

And how does it sound? Well, let me put it this way. I am not in the SLIGHTEST bit sad I sold my virus TI, nord lead 3 and Yamaha CS6R to get it And with the overdrive (fuzz) switch on........unf

Might post up a few demos a bit later if anyones interested.

Hey ,

Im a BIG SE1 fan and love mine , ive been considering a code or a voyager to add to my collection.

But its the poly aspect of the code that really interests me I have plenty of good monos to choose from but fewer GOOD poly's

However I have not heard a code so a couple of demos would be fab!

Id really love to hear just a couple of things.

Raw single Sawtooth filter open all the way then the same sound with half reduced filter and a touch of resonance anything else you feel like adding is a bonus

If you could find time I would be hugely appreciative.

Thanks

Congratz! Looks really nice!

I've also been reading about the Code and it is on my purchase list, maybe a 4-voice version with cs80 extra filters.

And yes, please post some demo samples if possible, no matter what kind.

I've been reading into getting a code/omega for awhile now, and have read they are quite "clean" sounding compared towards vintage analogs like moogs, prophets, oberheims etc..
This kind of puts me off getting one, cause that's what I'm after. I have a voyager and LOVE the sound of that, I just want 5 voices of it though!
Please post up some samples for us dude. Full quality too..

Have you listened to all the clips posted on the Studio Electronics site? The Omega has a wide variety of sounds and with the new overdrive upgrade option I'm sure you'll get plenty of dirt.

As far as loving the Voyager but wanting 5 voices, you're just setting yourself up for disappointment by trying to find that exact sound in a different synth. You're only gonna get the Voyager sound out of the Voyager. Seems like you need to be saving your coin for some rack mount editions!

The CODE is basically an Omega with a few tweaks and alterations.

The arp has been replaced by the filter control section - the sine wav on osc2 has been replaced by a triangle wave - evn3 can now control the inputs and it has some new midi additions.

I think thats about it, the rest is identical to the Omega.

The sound as stanard is clean I must admit. This is perfect for some sounds though and it really fits well into a mix. For those that want something dirtier though there is an amp overdrive or fuzz option. Switch this on and pretty much any sound turns into an evil distored growl...couple that with some unison and weeeee

It cost a **** load but I really am happy with it. Its very nice and easy to program and the sound is lovely.

I will post some demo mp3s and that raw sawtooth request hopefully over the weekend or next week. I would do it sooner but I am working five 13 hour overnight shifts in a row and im pretty wacked

I know some of you may think I'm being extreme but I think Studio Electronics should plug the unused 1/4" jack holes with black plastic snap-in plugs. They are available at any hardware store and are inexpensive. Seeing the internal ribbon cables and .1 connectors makes this $5000 instrument look unfinished in my opinion.

Other than that I think it's one of the most beautiful front panels I've ever seen. I've wanted one of these synths for a while. I'm jealous of the fun you're going to have with it.

jetplane, I agree with you there, although after playing with this the last couple of days those wholes will not be empty for long. I have already ordered two more voice cards to fill them Really enjoying this thing, it can certainly do some really mad out of it sounds with the distortion and modulations.

Ralph, if you can prize it from my fingers sure!

its a good idea that they dropped the arp on the code, it always crashes the omega. thats a nice synth, but i admit i like the looks of the Omega better. Are they still making the omega and is the optional fuzz available as an upgrade?

Of course they are. Info about the upgrade options is listed on SE's website.

As far as i have been told, the Omega series continues as long as SE is around.

The Code does look cool though.

hey, great to see this thread as i'm considering purchasing an omega shortly. prolly the 4 voice version as that's all i can afford. i've heard the CODE upgrades are kinda underwhelming from some folks. the "filter control" feature can be accomplished via sequencing and midi cc, and the optional overdrive i'm told can be bettered w/ a quality outboard unit (yes i know the OD is per voice). you do get the addition of sine wave -- not sure what that's worth. you also get 2 additional soundbanks which i hear are great.

i'd like to hear from any owners if they think the (alleged) missing rawness of the omega can be addressed by the 2600 or 303 filters. and crucially whether it's sufficient to get a single filter for mono or whether it's worth fully loading w/ one filter per voice for raw strings and such.

The new additions are not ground breaking by any road (I think it was just supposed to be some small tweaks and to get shot of that useless arpeggiator). The filter control section is handy though as you can switch filters from a knob now rather than an edit menu, and the new sine wave will allow for different sounds of course.

Ive no doubt you can better the overdrive/distortion with an external unit (you could say that about most onboard effects on synths), but what it does is very impressive to my ears anyway and adds drastically to the sonic possibilities of the synth on its own. When I owned the Nova edition SE1X with overdrive I kept it on all the time it was that good! After playing with the CODE overdrive for these last few days now I dont think I would purchase the Omega without overdrive vs the CODE with it (and price difference factored in) given the choice.....actually, I KNOW I wouldnt

demos to follow soon.......ish

I'd love to hear some simple sounds demoing the new sinewave option. Plus some clips with 'OD on' and 'OD off' would be cool. Love the SE gear but those tracks on Novamusik's site are terrible. They do little to highlight the Code's potential.

Thanks!

OMG those tracks on the novamusik site are hands down the best synth demos i've ever heard, they're what made me want to buy the synth! i guess that just goes to show once again as always -- horses for courses.

Yikes! 'Code Demo 2' goes so out of sync at the end it sounds like someone who has never deejayed trying to learn how to beat match

The one demo they have from SE actually has other synths from the SE product line featured as well so it makes it tough to decipher whether particular patches I am digging are actually coming from the Code or not.

I spoke with a rep over at Novamusik and he agreed that some more 'feature specific' demos (like the ones they have for the other SE synths that they sell) highlighting what is unique about the Code would be a good addition to the demo section. Hopefully they'll post some soon for those of us looking to drop that kind of coin on a synth we cannot demo hands on first!

The demos definitely didn't work for me but glad they worked for you. Studio Electronics is doin it right IMHO!

Id like to put the code up against my memorymoog plus and see how it performed....

Ive yet to hear a synth that can get anywhere near the sound of the memorymoog, 60 hz hum from the fan in the audio path aside! ;o)

heh

ok i just went up to the novamusik demo pg for the CODE at
Nova Musik- The Electronic Musician's Wonderland.

that song 2 demo wasn't on the nova site a few days ago, but i've heard it before, it's done by Mark who does the presets for SE. he outlines what does what here:
OMEGA 8 AUDIO: 11-16-06 Updated
and there are some very cool CODE sounds on there. but yeah, the track itself is a mess.

the other 4 demos on the novamusk site are phenomenal, check them out! what i was told is they were done w/ a 4 voice CODE w/ OD, multitracked. tony from novamusik said they used some of the optional filters but greg from SE said no, so i don't which it is.

The track I was referring to above is actually Demo 3 in your link but Demo 2 from this link;

http://www.novamusik.com/sounds.aspx

To clear up any confusion I was referring to this one;

http://www.novamusik.com/sounds/codesong3.mp3

As far as that demo being done by Mark from SE, I believe you are referring to the track 'Studio Electronics Song Two' which is actually linked from SE's site. That track features multiple SE synths not just the Code.

I much prefer the demos Novamusik did for the SE 1X NE. IMHO they do a much better job in illustrating the charecteristics unique to that model.

Didn't mean to offend anyone by my comments, the tracks on the Novamusik site just don't do it for me personally but it's great that others are enjoying them.

that's the one yeah but it's on the novamusik site now too. the bass and strings at the beginning are the CODE and they are killer.. that one you're not liking is harsh but i dig it and i think it shows off a lot of cool squelchy sounds you can make w/ the CODE, i think the bass esp is killer. and that samonikallcode track is just the sickness, that is all CODE including the percussion.
