Sales rank discussion -> sales trends

I think a discussion of current sales ranks for electronic music products and synthesizers could be interesting. So i opened a new topic. Maybe somebody has different sales ranks from different retailers? So, here are current sales ranks of some products (with lots of Waldorf products because of a diskussion about Streichfett sales in an different topic) of the reseller Thomann which i picked from the Thomann website today:

My understanding is (sorry, it is only a somehow educated guess!), that these sales rank are based on the number of orders (not: sales) of a product in the period of the last six months.

A Moog Sub Phatty (a wonderful product of you ask me) for example with a relatively low sales rank (749) - now - does not mean that this product hadn't had good sales in the past. I also have to admit that Thomann sales usually are only somehow representative for European sales.

It seems to me that cheap synthesizers dominate the sales - with some interesting exceptions.

But 749 isn't "relatively low." It's actually pretty good. Even a Korg Kross 61 is at 2227, and they tend to sell bucketloads of those kinds of synths.

I think your conclusion is a bit flawed, and not really considering the variables of how long certain instruments have been out, the length of term this sales data covers, and that Thomann is just one store in Europe and probably not representative of worldwide.

For example, the DSI Pro 2 is at 276…is not the cheapest mono to be had by far, and has only been available for a very short while. By looking at these numbers you would assume that it outsells the Microkorg massively…which has been out for like 10 years and is one of the best selling synths of all time. Somehow I doubt that is true… While it may have outsold the Microkorg in the last few months…and at Thomann…which I'm assuming is a store more for established nerds versus Guitar Center where key novices would tend to shop (and doesn't tend to carry many higher end keyboards). I'd be willing to bet that if you looked at worldwide sales in the last few months…the Microkorg probably still outsells the Pro 2…

Sub Phatty may "only" be at 749 at this time but again in the past year I'm thinking its been further up there closer to the time of its release (prior to the announcement of Sub 37). In fact I think the Sub 37 greatly affected sales of the Sub Phatty…

And when you have sales ranks that go down to 64000+, 749 is definitely not "relatively" low… I'm guessing that selling individual units will cause large jumps in rank, its not like Thomann is selling you know 10,000 Sub Phattys in 6 months (or whatever), its probably more like 50 or even less.
