Do you Virus but not EDM?

In the spirit of another thread, I was wondering if there were many Virus owners out there that don't do EDM..... I mean none. Not, "It's not my primary thing but..."

None.

It's such a versatile synth you could even make polka with it. But it might sound electronic and people like to dance to polka, so that might make it EDM.

Guess I don't really understand what you're ultimately looking for. Examples of music other than EDM made with the virus, or feedback from a select few who use it for downtempo music?

EDM-free here. I pretty much use it for shimmering bells, birdsounds, formanty pads, grungey distortion washes, drones and sfx. I would say I never use it as a bread and butter VA but then I don't think I use any bread and butter VA sounds to begin with.

Do you Massive but not Dubstep?
Do you Triton but not R&B?
Do you Vengeance but not EDM?
Do you Solina but not Porn?

Virus is a staple of Darkwave. Or it was.

I did Virus at some point, but never EDM. I sold it because I had to pay for a vacation (had the time of my life there so it was worth it).
Considering to get one again every other year.

No EDM from me and I have a KC. I use it for all things polysynth. I don't do any mono leads or bass though - I prefer other things for that.

I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I'm thinking an Access Virus is one of the most pervasive electronic instruments in the history of electronic music. Its so good that they haven't really changed the core of it since it was first released over what, 17 years ago? I would be willing to bet most Virus owners don't EDM. Its really flexible and just has damn good sounding oscillators, filters, and FX. Proud owner of a Virus B.

The other somewhat unspoken question is what counts as EDM. Some people refer to anything electronic-sounding as EDM, whereas others only count the more narrow modern mainstream output as such.

I have a Virus C. I used it on my last post-rock instrumental record for pads and drones. It's a wonderful sounding machine though I'm still getting my head around the patch creation process.

There's a cool thread here, "Do you MPC but not Hip Hop" that I thought turned into a pretty good thread. Just thought maybe we could do the same thing for the Virus.

That's all.

That's cool. Not questioning the thread premise. I think my confusion has more to do with me not understanding exactly what EDM is (or all these other billions of electronic music genres and sub-genres). I'm getting old.

It's also a little off-putting that the question seems to exclude those who use the Virus in multiple fashions. I do make some music that could be classified as some form of EDM, but I also incorporate my TI into other genres, often sort of progressive rock and jazz/fusion-leaning.

Yeah, I use it for whatever electronic music I feel like making at the time. It may or may not be "danceable". Either way it's an unbelievable tool for any genre of music. Especially ambient. The pads, soundscapes, and fx it's capable of...

I think I'm gonna work on a Bluegrass tune made entirely with the TI, just for the LULZ.

Had an Indigo 2 briefly. Kinda lusting after another one after seeing it in capable hands (Tycho). His was a Redback though, not sure if there's a difference. No EDM here. Instrumental Post-Rock and Electronic Space Rock is my domain...

If you'll allow shameless plug... All synths in the tracks of this playlist are made with a Virus TI, and it's not EDM :

Agreed. I've owned many Viruses and have used all of them for EDM and non-EDM. Funny thing is, I don't really make a lot of EDM these days and, when I do, I tend to make it on my laptop using soft synths only. My Virus still gets used a LOT for everything else, though (e.g., downtempo, ambient, trip-hop, synthpop).

I don't own a Virus but I know several people who do and none of them make EDM.

Add to the list "do you eurorack, but no noise?"
