I don't understand the "build it yourself" concept when all you have to do is mount the PCB to the chassis. What's the point? It's like Moog assembled 99% of it for you and then gave up. It's not a DIY project and it's not a finished product. I don't get it.

The Werkstatt sounds more like a Korg to me then their previous Moog's.

If the badge wasn't there, I wouldn't have associated it with that company.

On the upside, I suppose it's pretty cool that Moog is releasing a unique instrument that can even sound slightly toy-ish.

Yeah, WTF. It's all surface mount too. Not even amenable to modding.

Moog has clearly been looking at ANYWARE-INSTRUMENTS and MFB though these companies likely have at minimum used versions or circuits inspired by Moog circuits.

I think one main motive was the workshop thing they did at Moogfest. People come to the factory and assemble something simple without significant training.

The secondary motive that I've not researched and can only guess on is perhaps being a "kit" aspect means some kinds of electrical compliance laws and mandatory testing can be skipped.

Also Korg did that expensive more accurate MS-20 kit recreation. These things may be testing the viability of various sales models for new gear.

I think it is cool. I was hoping to see it for $200, though.

Is there any way to connect a keyboard to it?

You can totally mod SMT stuff, it's just more fiddly. Also, take a look at the circuit board -there's a breadboard section for you to add your own stuff as well as numerous patch points and jumpers. I agree that it's likely being offered in kit form to cut down on consumer product overhead - hence the video disclaimer about not recommending modification.

You can't connect a keyboard directly, your best bet is to get a MIDI-CV converter and strip a few wires.

Irony that it has a German name?

It's only available in the US, which makes me wonder why they bothered to send me an email about it.

It's also kind of expensive.

It reminds me a bit of my Microzwerg - half a Microzwerg really.

D.

What a surprise! It seems Moog learned a design idea from the company anyware instruments (look for the Tinysizer!). I don't know if Tommy from Anyware Instruments is happy with it. But why not.

And perhaps this is the beginning of a new trend giving synthesizers German names...

If you mean using the plastic header block for the patch points, that's a very typical thing to do for building any prototype. When I started building computers for a living in the 1980s it was common to wire up different parts of the machine with similar cables, - hard disks, serial and parallel ports, and many other devices were bridged with ribbon cables that terminated in the same sort of plastic blocks up to about 10 years ago.

Yes, and i think it is a very smart idea to use this for synthesizers.

-

1. looks ugly
2. only 1 osc
3. no real keys
4. no noise/audio in

Reminds me more of a fancy monotribe. At least it has glide though.

I don't know what they did to that sound on the video in post, but even the plain oscillators sound amazing to me.

If the badge wasn't there, it would sell for half the price, and half the people would be interested in it.

Moog kind of lost me with the Moog Guitar. From what I've seen of the Sub 37, though, I've been encouraged. Now this. Ugh.

Surprised to see this after Moog pretty much said it wasn't going to happen post Moog Fest. Interesting move. I guess they have one eye on the cheaper end of the market where things like the Korg Volcas have been well received. This does look more like something you might expect from Korg. I think it's a bit pricey for this kind of thing. On the other hand it's a Moog, which will get a lot of people excited. The little patch panel on the right adds a lot of possibilities as well. And then there is the mod community. This thing is going to be modded to death! It's going to be very interesting seeing what people do with this thing. Werkstatt Mutha ****a!!! Gets the thumbs up from me

Here's a more in depth demo. It looks like it has Keyboard CV Out so it can be played with a full keyboard.
