This would be a good time for the guy from Jomox to come in and say "no sh*t, Sherlock".
I'd say Korg has already proven it's quite possible. (Well, depends what you mean by 'decent', of course!)
On the other hand I believe the promised price is challenging to Akai and is causing the delay here...

It's not fair to compare that price to Jomox's, though.
Akai and Korg produces their stuff in massive batches in God-knows-what kind of sweatshops.
Jomox is pretty much one guy handcrafting them by him self.

And Jomox has real wood ends.

the rest of that movie's soundtrack is just someone huffing glue and sitting on a keyboard.

Great for b-movie parties in the 80s, though.

Reminded me of the overused Sweet Tee "break out the casio and the drum machine".

Somehow I forgot the Volca Beats actually existed

Though the people at Korg surely had more time to hone their analogue technique from the Monotron on. Akai jumped right in.

The snare is a very flat squirt of white noise, needs more envelope on it? Hats and synth bass sound good to me. Any accent for the bass?

Sweet. I was honestly afraid to even click on that link after months of "boy who cried wolf/rick rolling" joke links.

Better than a Volca Beats? I'd say yes, considering it has the synth in it and more patterns and steps. A bit weak in the BD, but the snare and hats sound good to me, both much better than a beats actually.

Exactly my feelings. I think the digital TR-8 smokes this tenfold. Funny world this is.

Agreed.

Also it appears to have a synth part. Volca Beats doesn't. Both are good in their own "cheap" right though.

They basically combined the Volca Bass and Beats into one. Maybe that was the cause of the delay.

Being Akai....would be awesome and fitting if you could load samples into at least one of the drum slots.

Well it is Akai. I wouldn't expect it from anyone else for a drum machine.

Damnit, now I have to buy *another* drum machine.

Needs compression or maybe some drive on the drums. Probably a RAT or similar pedal on the drum output would solve a lot. But I already have two drum machines that do really good kicks. I like the bassline synth and the other percussion sounds enough to justify the small price.
