My own simplified synth history

Alex's synth history
(from a failing memory)
(these are strictly the keyboards/synths and do not include drum machines, effects processors, sequencers, multi-track recorders, mixers, etc.)

Born: 1971

1983 (approx): Casiotone VL-1
1984 (approx):Casiotone MT-45
1986: Yamaha Portasound (model unknown *)
1989: Akai AX-60 (still in my set-up)
1989: Ensoniq Mirage DSK-1
1990: Roland D-10 (still in my set-up)
1995: Casio SK-1 and Casio SK-5
1995: Roland S-330 (rack mount) + Dirtector-S (sequencer) (still in my set-up)
2015: Arturia MicroBrute (obvious still in my set-up)
2015: Korg MicroKorg (obvious still in my set-up)
2015: Aira (Roland) TB-3 (obvious still in my set-up)
2015: Korg Monotron Duo (obvious still in my set-up)
2015: Korg Monotron Delay (obvious still in my set-up)

(*) This Portasound keyboard featured small keys, accompanying chords and bass functions, pre-set drum patterns (various styles) + drum fill button, as well as the possibility to program one's own drum patterns. Synth sounds were numerous but of the standard fare of the era. I never was able to find this keyboard online for reference. This was before the days of the infamous DX-7.

It was a dark and stormy night, a night just like this one....

One grandmother had a Hammond B3 and the other had a Hammond M100. I guess that was my start on electronic instruments. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately depending on your point of view) my family moved 1000 miles away when I was 5, so I only played the Hammonds when visiting.

Then an uncle gave our family a Magnus Chord Organ that my cousins no longer played. We played it to death (literally.) At some point, my mom acquired an old upright piano which I also played ad nausea.

Junior high was cornet and baratone. I migrated to guitar at the typical age of 15 and bass guitar at 16. I stuck with it and still play both.

Around 1976 or so, some rich dude in high school brought in an ARP 2600 for a jazz band concert. It was set up in the band room, and my buddy and I secretly turned it on when the room was empty. But try as we did, we never got a sound out of it!

A few years after high school, around '80 or '81, I was in a rock band with a bass/keyboard player who had a Farfisa. We'd run it though a fuzzbox to make it sound different, but it only sounded like a fuzzy Farfisa. We threatened him with expulsion if he didn't buy a proper synth. We were thinking Oberheim or Prophet, but he bought a Jupiter-4. I loved that synth, and I played it all the time. We broke up about 6 months later, and I didn't touch a synth outside of a music store for about 10 years.

Around 1990, I bought a Yamaha CS-10 to noodle around on as I was still a guitar and bass player. Around 2003, I bought a Yamaha YS-200 and an MU-90. These got me into Midi and sequencing as I had Cakewalk on my computer.

After that, I had a long line of synths - some I loved and some I sold a few weeks after buying. I'm partial to modules as they take up less space.

One's I have owned

I have been in multiple studios for around two decades over the years as an owner and session musician at other studios. Now it's mostly just my home studio. I am going to try and keep the list to synths and stuff I actually owned, although many other synths were around for many years and even though I used them all the time, I didn't actually own them...like a Roland JP8000, Korg DW8000 and a Wurlitzer Electric Piano which I all loved.

1980's (I was craving analog synths but did not have that type of cash)
Casio SK-1
Synsonics Drums (loved that thing)
Korg DDM-110
Korg Poly-61 (I remember the 61M -MIDI- model being available and the salesman asked me if I used computers and I told him "no")
Korg DS-8 (cut my teeth with MIDI on this synth, sold it in 2012)
Yamaha DX7 (bought and sold it to make a few bucks)

1990's
Yamaha SY22 (kinda cheap, but got me through college gigging)
Korg Wavestation (massive flood ruined it)
Ensoniq ASR-10 Rack (still own it with TONS of sounds)
Suzuki Hammond XK-1 (owned for a short time for a tour)
Fender Rhodes Mark V (rare model, lighter in weight for touring purposes, but it lacked the classic bell sound)
Ensoniq TS-12 (cut my teeth learning this piece inside and out along with the ASR-10, loved the key bed)
Novation BassStation Rack (still own it)
Korg Wavestation SR (still own it, missed my Wavestation from years earlier)
Fender Rhodes Mark II (bought for $75 at thrift shop, daddy's junky music store guys were right behind me trying to buy it from me. Sold for around $700 in 2012)
Roland Jupiter 6 (bought it for around $600, still own it with Europa Mod)
EMU Proteus 2000

2000's
Access Virus B
Novation K-Station
Korg Triton 76 Pro
Alesis QS7 (was a practice keyboard for a short time)

2010's
Virus Polar TI2
Korg SV-1 (still own it)
Sequential Prophet 6 (recent purchase, love this thing & still own it)
Yamaha CP50 (practice keyboard, still own it but not attached to it)

born in 82. i was in a few punk bands in early high school. played bass. right around 98 i went to my first rave and got introduced to trance (among other rave type things). i started mixing records for a bit but i've been a musician at heart since day one, so my vinyl fetish came and went pretty quickly. in the meantime i started making beats on that old rebirth program. switched to fruity loops around version 3 i think. messed around with all the vsts i could find cracks for. right around 03-04 i pretty much stopped writing stuff and went back to mixing, but this time i did it all digitally in acid pro. it was mostly for fun though. got back into fruity loops (or fl studio i guess its called now, lol) around 2010 through 2012 but quickly became tired of feeling like i was just programing songs and so i decided to see what i could do with hardware right around the end of 2013. so, in a general order of appearance-

no longer own-
casio vl-1
volca bass
volca beats
volca keys
mininova
bass station 2
minibrute
meeblip anode
sr16
reface cs
jp-08
tt-303

i also had the three original pocket operators as well an original koassilator, and both the monotron duo and delay

current setup-
monotribe (hooked into microbrute via cv)
microbrute
tr-8
volca sample
oto biscuit (currently in 'der oto' mode)
reface dx
dreadbox hades
korg minilogue

on my buy list-
vermona drm1
twisted electrons acid8
a new bs2 (my only 'i shouldn't have sold that' synth thus far)

...and a nice poly. i can't currently play the keyboard/piano but really want to learn. if i end up learing how to play, im thinking a prophet 6 is in the cards for me, but im still doing research to see what would best suit my needs. as you can probably tell from my history here, i don't have a large music budget. three kids and a wife that loves to travel doesn't help.

i have a **** ton of guitar pedals as well which i didn't list.

-- The beginner's crappy hardware era --

1996 - Korg Poly 800 (crappy then, crappy now)
1997 - Yamaha CS1x (pretty horrible)
1998 - Roland MC-303 (embarassing)
1999 - Yamaha AN1x (never liked its tone)

-- The completely ITB era AKA "I can do everything with Reaktor and Logic" --

2001 - 2014 No hardware whatsoever, except for several crappy controllers that came and went.

-- The analog resurgence era AKA "you can't do this with software" --

2015 - Moog Slim Phatty (not a single day I haven't loved to death this little thing)
2016 - Korg Polysix (in restoration process, I adore its sound and yep: you can't do this with software)
