all this dark techno lately

Was listening to the new release by Prostitutes today and was thinking its a pretty awesome time for techno. Any other new artist like these that are worth looking into? Any other forum members digging this style as well?

I know a few on that list! Personally too!

You got to remember these guys are coming from the deep noise and experimental world. It's an interesting trend. Lots of artist on 100% Silk and L.I.E.S. come from that world as well!

Actually besides Juan Silent Servant it's feels more like from industrial music and culture to me. Techno has a little more swing to me...not like house but more than stiff intense industrial.

Anyways...all great dudes on this list...good to support them. Especally Juan who's been doing this for a LONG time.

Haha yeah, very familiar with their previous work. I used to jam with some harsh noise groups some years back. Kinda lame that on the noise side people consider branching out this way selling out but I'm really enjoying the results.

Interesting stuff. I know you aren't supposed to produce around things that are popular, but the genre actually interests me. It seems psytrance isnt the only genre that lets you go wild.

Is there a reason all of those tracks sound like they are pushing the limiter to around 100db of gain reduction? I understand dark expiremental noise, but those songs sounded like someone had every track level at +12 and then just hard limited it.

They sound like my Virus TI after it has lost connection over USB and goes into distortion / crackling mode.

It's a nice feature to have in a song... but the whole song? Me thinks it sounds like ****. The last one is the only listenable one imo.

Agreed, although too busy with psytrance at the mo. Been meaning to get into that sort of thing.

Well into all this stuff myself at the moment. A lot of Techno sounds far too clean and fluffy these days, even the hard stuff. I prefer a bit of grit and grunge in my Techno and this stuff is pushing that hard. It sounds more real, more pure. It's like the old days when it wasn't about high quality production as much as just laying down tracks and getting them out there. It's raw and that's how I think Techno should be

Nah, you play it when you get back and go to the toilet and walk back in in a gas mask and pvc catsuit.

Yeah, good stuff.

Loving this more experimental kind of techno myself!

(Hieroglyphic Being's latest album is fantastic, but couldn't find any of the tracks on Youtube)

Next follows shameless self-promotion, as these are from a disc I have collaborated on (on the first track):

One of my favorite all time acts.

Here's a tune I've done, after listening to their music for days and most of the sounds are from my Slim Phatty.

Daisuk it'd be interesting to know why you put the rest of those tracks in with Drexciya. Drexciya was a group that was hugely original and experimental, with clearly defined personal aesthetic.

The rest of the tracks in this thread (minus the british murder boys) are pretty much the opposite.

What (since the late seventies) has been 'experimental' about making dark industrial noise/techno?

Yes, I am trying to be a bit provocative, but not flaming. What is experimental and fresh about this?

Most of what I hear here sounds to me like plain old techno, with a bit more distortion/overdrive than usual...

Hehe, no worries, a bit of a debate won't hurt! I think it boils down to personal opinion about many things, and how you listen to and experience music. If you can't hear the personal aesthetic in for instance Actress or Hieroglyphic Being's productions, I will just have to say you probably haven't listened enough to their music. Give me something even closely reminiscient to the originality of their body of work produced by earlier techno producers, and I will stand corrected, but I doubt you will find any. As for exactly what makes their music "experimental" I think it's a way they, in my point of view, are able to mix the good old tried and tested ways of producing techno-like tracks with something weird sounding and having it work - obviously with a mix of newer production techniques and equipment (and more influences). Actress, for instance, has an ability to make incredibly "cold" sounding soundscapes sound remarkably organic and "breathy". There's a dynamic in his productions unlike anything I think I've ever heard before. It's hard to pinpoint the creative part of these guys work I'm particularly drawn to - but to me, these guys sound very original and unlike anything I have heard before.

As for the other guys I've posted in this thread, some of these songs are probably not their most original tracks, but it was those I could find on Youtube and therefore showcase here. And I can't fully defend the inclusion of for instance Karenn in here, it's definitely not particularly original sounding, but I do think they have an industrial take on techno that I haven't myself heard by earlier producers.

That said, I am by no means a techno expert, and I haven't been following techno since the 70's. If you can show me more original sounding or more experimental sounding techno producers than the ones I have posted, I would love to hear them!
