Behringer Ultrafex II. Bass-boost, 'sheen' and a stereo widener, all in glorious analogue for pennies.

Alesis Microlimiter. A little smasher.

Yamaha REX50. A near SPX90 disguised as one of those peculiar Yamaha desktop formats.

Zoom RFX1000. Almost the same as the 1201 but a lot less hissy.

You can get all these for 20 or 30 quid (each!) with a bit of luck.

Lemon juice. To add air and very clear vocals to a dull mic, no ****!! Singers will live the way it removes mucus and tightens things up

Korg X5DR for sampler synth stuff, especially pads, and has exceptional drum samples

Yamaha FB-01 for that great OPM FM sound, with flexible features

AKG D 2000 E for super vintage in your face sound

Sony TC-KE500S and various cassette tapes for vintage tape sound

BOSS RX-100 for harsh distortion that sounds good (and some spring reverb sometimes)

shure M57 mic mixer - awesome transistors + transformers circuit with a lovely tone when you drive it a bit. cheap as.

boss ce-300. not about to kill the dimension d on its home turf, but can hold its own ground just being what it is.

EH holy grail reverb pedal. I can't get over how nice this reverb sounds on synths.

It's intended to be used on vocals, but basically it's pitch to MIDI (with pitch bend and volume) plus four MIDI controlled pitch shifters. It's got two modes, one for ordinary pitch shifting (static or MIDI controlled), and "harmonize" mode where it attempts to detect the input pitch and shift it to the desired notes (set either from the panel or over MIDI). The four pitch shifters are individually controllable, so you can put in a single static tone and use a MIDI keyboard to play chords with it. Especially this mode gets quite weird if you don't send it the kind of signal it's expecting, or apply feedback or whatever. You can even connect the MIDI output to the input for extreme strangeness. I get perverse joy from making the oddest sounds possible from simple gear, so the VP-70 is a real delight. It's a glitch record in a single rack space. I got it for $50. I've attached a sample; it's just the VP-70 and a Casio MT-68.

And speaking of which, the Casio VA-10 is another winner. It's got a similar pitch tracking thing and is even capable of composing its own aleatoric elevator music from talk radio, thanks to its "harmony arranger" feature. I modified mine in a very peculiar way, but haven't finished it.

I've got one of those too. It's ok if you really want an SPX90 for like $30, but mine's collecting dust. The ensemble algorithm is alright. They recycled some of the same chips and algorithms in a number of more useful boxes, like the FX900. But in 2011 I'm not sure they're worth bothering with, at any price.

what do you use it for? ive used it for the ringmod once or twice..
Yeah, ringmod can do cool stuff. I also like the lo-fi section. BUT, the reason I like it is, I'll find the effect "type" I want, but then as the signal goes through, I'll scroll through the variations of that preset with that other nob and get all sorts of crazy glitchy stuff (a little secret gift to you )

In Harshnessland lush, my Yamaha comp/limiter GC2020 is KING> Mash up instrument and drum loops, then pass them through a Kaoss pad 3 and then through the GC2020. Harshness has never been so nice to listen to. Add then a Fatso for some recovery silkyness. Bon appetit.

secret weapons are secret!

i misunderstood the thread title, frankly.
.....

my proper answer is that if it's good for your music it's good.
and where it sits on the 'value chart' is entirely irrelevant

this is art not economics
........

that said, and because i use them constantly -the best money i ever spent on any gear was for a pair of Blondie mics a fellow gearslut built for me a couple years ago.
At about 300 bucks for a pair nothing else I've tried under a grand comes anywhere near them for vocals and cabinet-mic'ing.
they sound beautifully natural and smooth on just about anything; being an omni small-diaphragm with a close proximity field
the only time i need to EQ them is in a dense mix or to get the rock 12-string scooped sound.

i wish i could recall the guy's handle or if he's still taking sales
if you search the forum for Blondies you should be able to find it pretty quick

Best advice i can give for low end...

Low cut filter @ 35 hz

Reduce 300 hz *no mans land*

Small boost @ 100 hz

No matter what kind of bass you're running, these eq tips will make it 10x better

Low end $$$ not low end frequencies. I think this is how shaft9000 got confused... Confusing

Have you tried this on bass that has too much 100hz and needs more 300 hz before ?
