Insert sockets

on your mixer, what do you use your insert sockets for?

ive never used them, but theyre obviously good for something.

compressors, send/return fx?

enlighten me.

I use them anytime I use an insert fx.

Like, oh say... everything besides reverb and delay? Oh, sometimes those too.

Some mixers allow you to chose Pre or Post EQ, which can make a world of difference when using effects. But you have the general idea already and it's not limited to just one device. You could chain a EQ, Compressor and efex box all together in one insert point.
