Alesis Andromeda 14 voice - bad idea?

hey

I just got an offer for an A6 with two out-of-tune voices. The owner told me to 'just switch them off, no problem'.

does this really work like this? should I pass? 14 voices would still be okay for me.

thanks!

Yes you can permanently disable the bad voices but make sure it is only 2 voices that are bad. Don't trust the auto-tune saying they all pass either - use your ears. They can still sound off.

Could you not just get the two out of tune voices re-calibrated? I'm guessing it shouldn't be too much hassel unless there something badly wrong. Although I don't have an Andy so I don't really know.

From what I vaguely recall (and my understanding could be incorrect so get more specialist opinions) the fault is in hardware and basically means some boards need to be replaced to rectify the problem. There's no easy repair apart from swapping out the voice modules since the boards are difficult to service without specialised equipment, relevant IC's are scarce etc.

There may or may not have been a suspect batch of A6's which exhibit a higher osc failure rate than others.....

If two osc's have failed you can indeed turn them off but the question would be how long it will be before more start failing with the same problem.... particulary *IF* they are from a dodgy batch.

Imo it isn't worth the risk and future maintenance nightmares but again, that's my current understanding of the issue which may or may not be correct & up to date.

According to a pricelist kindly posted on another thread it's roughly U$900 for a replacement voice board. (Not sure what the landed cost in your country would be). So factor that into the price of the purchase because imo it may be worth getting this.

being just some random guy on the internet as i am:

i would not buy it unless..

1) the price is so good that it's still cheap even including a spare voice board.
2) you can physically get the voice board in your hands before you buy the andy
3) you trust the seller of the andy to hold on to it until you get the new board.

like others have said, who's to say how many voices are going to go down on this thing.

also. think about when it comes to selling it: MUCH easier to sell a fully working one.
