Real time midi recording while tracking live audio

Hey,

I am not a keyboards guy so please don't flame me too bad if this is a stupid suggestion.

I am setting up a project studio with a live room big enough to track 4-6 piece bands live. I was intending to record live audio with all the instruments except the keyboard.

I have an old Roland a-50 midi keyboard and so instead of buying an expensive hardware synth module was just going to get some cheap box that could make some live sound. I would record the midi output from the keyboard direct into Sonar at the same time as the audio tracks.

Then at mix time we could find some nice soft synth patches for the recorded midi.

Will this work or am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

it will work like a charm. Music Technology both hardware and software offers thousands of possibilities. You dont need to invest loads of money to make great music. You could even make great music as many have done before using only freeware software.

when I do this with my A6 in logic pro Ive set up an audio recording track and a midi track at the same time.....this seems to work well at the start but then while capturing the audio fine it seems to forget about recording the midi after about 10 seconds or so

id like to have the midi file just to track my patch changes while noodling around if nothing else

Thanks for the confirmation.

Any suggestions for a cheap synth module with a midi through port?

Zombie - good point, I will make sure Sonar copes with simultaenous midi and digial auto feeds before embarrasing myself.
