Overdrive for 909 kick. Drum Machines & Samplers

A 909 BD also sounds pretty good through an SSL (like the E or G) when cranking the gain up on the channel, giving it a nice, aggressive distorted sound, but you don't lose any of the low end, which would make it sound wimpy and thin.

I use a Crowther Hot Cake with the 909. Keeps the low end in check!

Or Audio Damage Kombinator is a good plug.

Always good to layer though.

Yeah, you caught me. I'm lying to you all and trying my best at deceit and misdirection.

I've never found a distortion pedal get that aggressive yet bassy 909 kick like a overdriven channel or compressor. Even ones which work great on 303 lose articulation on kicks. Use of a gate and post eq is recommended.

I put the 909 kick through the Wavestation A/D inputs and dial up the overdrive>filter>eq effect.

I like the D16 Decimort on kicks.

Just picked up a Roland R-70. Take the preset 909 kick and overdrive the mixer... exact same sound as the Feel My M.F. kick

It's like the JD-800 of drum machines. Great machine.. it's so odd to go back to a "modern" drum machine after all these years with MPC's. Much less of a hassle with memory/management/etc.. it just remembers everything you do... what luxury..

Besides turning up the gain, my dp2 (same as dp4) has some nice overdrive style effects, some nice tape and radio presets that make it sound like an old jeep 909 kick from a classic hip hop or house track.

Most pedals use highpass filters before the actual distortion, to get rid of dc and very low frequencies, since this improves the sound character of the distortion itself on most sources like guitars or even 303s. but apparently this doesn't sound so good on electronic kicks
