Drums, in stereo!

New pet peeve: drum tracks/loops sent thru stereo spread effect.
Okay, let's face it: if you send anything thru it, it is going to sound good.
I am hearing more of this lately and the biggest drawback i see is the slight delay from one side to another- at least if you grid the perc.It seems like a shortcut to really well-produced drums/percussion, which traditionally took center, with some slight panning for hats/toms/crash.
As with most all processing, there can be applications where the FX add, but
as far as translation thru different mediums such as headphones to club to car, is the stereo imaging effect really noticeable unless you are in some kind of sweet spot thru speakers anyway? Or is it just easier to fit things in the mix overall? (Set it and forget it)
