controlling a roland vp 9000 with kaoss pad

would it be possible to set up a roland vp9000 and korg kaoss pad so that moving your finger up and down would control the pitch and moving your finger left and right would control the time?

if you set the x y movements on the kaoss pad to the right cc values then yeah, should work. Have to use the pc editor though.

alternatively you can set the knob parameters in the perform menu of the vp to respond to whatever cc the kaoss pad is sending out. either way. you dont need a computer to change it on the vp. you can scale the values on the vp as well.

It's crucial you get the CC#s to match between the kaoss pad and the VP9000. As others have explained above you can do that from either the kaoss pad end (with the software editor) or by mapping them in the VP9000. You may also want to take a look at your midi filter settings in the KP to make sure it is transmitting the CC messages, hit shift 4 (midi filter) and make sure you have CC set to On, you might also want to disable the other midi messages but that's not usually necessary unless you are finding your synth doing other strange things you weren't expecting it to.

Hold down the shift button then press the 4 button... This is for a KP3 though, is that the one you have? I'm not sure the button presses on the older onese since I use a KP3.

Maybe tell us, step by step, how you have the units connected up, and what you've actually tried doing.

the order of troubleshooting in this scenario is:

midi cables
midi channels (on both machines)
set up send cc's on kaoss pad
set up receive cc's on vp

it really cant be made any clearer besides sitting right in front of you and doing it for you. maybe try and grab a irl friend to help you.

hi, the kaoss pad midi out is connected to the vp9000 midi in

midi cables are fine
midi channel set to 1 on both machines

i believe the cc`s are set on the kaoss pad and cannot be changed, so i have set the vp9000s cc numbers to match the cc numbers in the kaoss pad manual...

Have you owned both units from new?

The kaoss pads midi ccs -can- be changed.

Which leads to two conclusions- a) if you got it second hand, then the previous owner may have changed the settings and b) you still haven't matched the ccs on the right perameters yet.

Also as an aside, the kp1 transmits midi pitch bend on the x axis as it's default setting, so if both units were at factory default settings you should have been able to control pitch (left right, not how you want but something to go on) from the start

Right, as you seem to totally incapable of reading the manual:

In MIDI Edit mode (“MIDI transmission settings”) you can hold down the corresponding
switch and rotate the PROGRAM knob to select the desired control number.

MIDI transmission settings
When you press the six PROGRAM MAP keys simultaneously, you will enter MIDI Edit mode. If
you then perform no operation for approximately 10 seconds or if you touch the touch panel, you
will return to normal mode.
In MIDI Edit mode, you can use the following operations to change the MIDI transmission settings.
• PROGRAM knob: Set the MIDI transmission channel (1–16)
PROGRAM MAP keys, FX ON/OFF, HOLD switches: Turn transmission on/off for each type
of MIDI message (refer to “Transmission on/off” in the above table).

X AXIS: PROGRAM MAP 5
Y AXIS: PROGRAM MAP 6

Again, cut and pasted from the manual, the exact parts that I lovingly highlighted in giant red ms paint boxes and posted earlier, with added bold highlights for extra flavour.
