Best synth for PWM?

Happy New Year everyone

What synth is best for PWM? Don't mind vintage (would prefer a rack-version though)

Basically, for those who are familiar with Dance Music Manual Vol 1, its in the chapter of making pads, and Rick is using a single pulse oscillator, and when he applies PWM, it just sounds like nothing I heard before. In this case, its more about the synth than programming skills. Gotta be analog.

Thanks thumbsup

My favorite PWM comes from the Livewire AFG Eurorack module.

For polyphonic pad duties, I like modulating the waveforms of Waldorf synths like the MWXT.

Not too sure about analog polysynth PWM, since I haven't played around with many. I liked the A6's waveform modulation capabilities when I played it.

Thanks BTByrd, youtube is blocked at work though

How much is that module? And the case? I couldn't find prices on their site.

AFG is a monster! I love it for aggressive sounding PWM duties!

For a cheap and wonderful PWM sound you cant beat the mks50 or Alpha Juno.

best PWM on a synth is the MS10 - hands down.

MS20 doesn't have it either

Thanks Beermaster. How much does an MS-10 usually go for? Are they super rare to find?

Best synth for PWM?

Theoretically couldn't pwm be achieved on fm synths such as a tx816? I can do it on my juno106 but wanting to know if pwm is only unique to analog circuitry or in synthesis it's about the sound waveform?

DarkPlasma,

Sadly the MS10 is a one VCO mono synth so not going to be an option for PAD duties. They probably sell for £500 upwards.

Juno60s are great for the PWM pad stuff tho.

@BTByrd - Thats aggressive!! This doesn't look too bad, $500 for this AFG osc module? Damn, im thinking instead of spending 3k on my next synth, I might just get a modular for that price, just the vco, vcf, some mods like lfos and envelopes. Thats it. The modules on that site look sick, Kraku!

Here is the sample I was talking about, guys. Listen to how the PWM sounds on this. Can anyone identify this synth?

Sounds like there is some sync in there, though...

The Oberheim SEM has real nice PWM.

For the sadistic, a Memorymoog or OB-X/Xa has sweet sounding PWM for a poly.

Also agree about the PolySix.

If you want a rackmount analog then the only choices are Voyetra 8, SE Omega, or Slim Phatty.

a good option is the korg mono poly...

you can layer 4 different pwm settings and detune each osc to a chord and have instant one finger pads from hell. great filter and does double duty as an incredible bass machine. arps on it can have a distinct sound as well because you can drop out a note or have each note being run in the arp have a different tone completely. very versatile. if you need poly it's only 4 notes nd each note will be a bit thin but pwm tends to have a thined out sound anyway so hey...

So you want a polyphonic synth, preferably rack unit, with good PWM. Roland MKS-7.

I find the Roland D-50/550 PWM quite unique..

Thanks for the suggestions guys! So which of those comes closest to the PWM in this clip? MKS-7 / PolySix / monoPoly/ Juno ?

I always liked Liam's use of PWM. Like on the intro to weather experience which is an Alpha juno. The mks50 is the Alpha rack and is as cheap as peanuts these days.

Well it might just be an MKS-50. Sounds really similar, don't you think?

Yes almost a perfect match id say. There are plenty of other synths that will make that sound but not in a 1u rack that wont break the bank...

You can always play a pwm pad from a softsynth, then isolate the notes to play a mono analog synth and just to do multiple passes. I've done this with my roland sh09, sounds unbelievable.

Funny how many people suggest a Roland synth for PWM. While the PWM sounds nice it is somewhat limited to 50% - 95% PW only and in most Roland synths PWM is controlled from one source for both oscillators.

The Sequential Prophet for example can do 0% - 100% PW and you can control each oscillator separately (in that case you have only one LFO, but you could use the Env or OSC).

For me the Xpander is the best PWM synth, alone that you can use separate LFOs to modulate PWM (or ENVs for that matter).

One apparently overlooked contender for great PWM sounds is the Oberheim Matrix 6 / M6r / M1000

It may not be the best sounding synth otherwise, but it really has some wonderful pwm going on. Surprisingly big.

+1 for MKS-50. Especially nice with built in chorus, and cheap as chips!
