If you are into romplers Proteus VX is free and comes with a free bank of sounds. You can expand it with more banks also (Planet Earth sounds, Beat Garden, ect.)

Native Instruments has a free section on their webpage with some good stuff in it as well. However they are limited when compared to the full versions.

For an interesting free vst fx plug check out dblue glitch. I find myself using it very frequently.

If you bought Cubase the bundled vsti's are really good. I don't know about the other DAWs cause I haven't used them.

I also really love DCAM Synth Squad, Korg Legacy Digital and NI Komplete, but you have to drop some cash for those.

For free try some of the Togu Audio Line synths and fx:

If you want to shell out a bit more all of the following I've found to be top quality (in no particular order):

1. U-He ACE
2. Waldorf Largo
3. Spectrasonics Omnisphere
4. Spectrasonics Trilian
5. FXpansion Synth Squad

What is the very first VST you would purchase?

Thanks guys
If I was broke and I could only buy a single synth that would be without any hesitation Camel Audio Alchemy.

If I was completely broke and could not spend any money , that would be Crystal.

This. More so if the DAW is Logic Pro.

u-he zebra 2.

I'll probably be on this for a long time, but I absolutely love this plugin because it has everything you'd ever want in a synthesizer.
