Spend money with a vengeance!

In 2010 I went unemployed, then saved up and got married and had to pay for that. Time for me to get slutty in 2011. My immediate plans are:

1) Elektron Octatrack
2) Dave Smith Tempest
3) PAIA modular build in the garage during summer widda bier!
4) Hardware compressor. Either Drawmer 1968ME or a UBK Fatso. Can't do both!

Here for the gear

in 2010 I moved to Washington state from Nebraska...so I know no bands and have no equipment for live sound. Starting new means it will be a slow process.

Need to get my name out there so I can start working sound again.

I really want to start my live sound work again I want to finally have all my own equipment instead of relying on what ever crap the venues or bands supply me with.

I intend to have a heavy focus on SQ vs just being as loud as possible.

I am tired of vocals sounding like the screamer has a kazoo in his mouth because the 20 yr old EV speakers they provided me with are shot.

This year I will try to find really good deals on microphones.

I have a wish list and will add more high end mics over time.

AKG C214's, some Shure Beta 91a's, SM58's SM57's beta 52's, sm81's, senheiser 609 or e906, and maybe some Royer 121's, or Neumann KMS 105's if I can find some body desperate to sell some.

A pawn shop local to me has an AKG perception 220 for $75 so that may be were I start.

If anybody has any thing they want to donate let me know.

  • Musicman Stingray
Not sure how much else I'm going to go after in 2011. The rest of the wishlist right now looks something like:
  • MacBeth Dual Oscillator and Backend Filter
  • Cwejman S1 Mk II
  • Slate Dragon
  • Stereo compressor (API 2500? A Designs Nail?)
  • Eventide H8000FW replacement if they announce one
  • ARP Odyssey Mk II
  • Kyma Pacarana
  • Pro One
  • Elka Synthex
  • Synton Syrinx
  • Some other Eurorack modules to go in the enclosure I pick up for the MacBeth stuff
Well, halfway through the year I got the LIO-8, still waiting on the Solaris (June?), got a Pro One and Odyssey from my wishlist along with some software (Geist) and a custom built device to integrate guitar pedals with my line level stuff and my interfaces. Plus I picked up a Crumar Spirit that I hadn't even bothered to put on my wishlist.

Still need that Musicman Stingray. I'm also going to sell my Axe-Fx Ultra and get the new one.

And I've added a Serge Animoo and some Modcan stuff to my wishlist.

The Axe-Fx is the only thing I'm sure I'll be getting in 2011 though.

- Replace my obsolete 8x8 MIDI interface with a smaller one and decide what to do with the rest of my MIDI rig.

Mid-year status:

- Only 10 spaces left on the modular.
- Bought a Roland HD-1 VDrums Lite set (much better than Alesis ControlPad)
- Replaced 8x8 Midisport with a cheap ($20) 1x1 interface, mostly for clock sync
- Rack synths are sold or on sale. Will only keep modulars, keyboard synths, and grooveboxes/drummachines.
- Money from the sale will go towards a small eurorack system (first modules already ordered).

Well this year is going to be about getting some work done with music. I've had a few pieces here and there over the years, but they got put aside for long periods because I was so busy, then got sold to pay bills.

I just did the majority of my 2011 plan, and couldn't be happier. I got rid of my APC40 (I got it brand new off Amazon for $50. I had credit from turning in old school textbooks), I just didn't have any content to jam with, and while it was a nice piece it's something I wouldn't use until way later in my musical journey. Also Ableton and the approach I took to learning it left me too overwhelmed, and I wasn't having any fun.

So this year's plans so far have ended up being -
New studio/work PC for audio and graphics. It's a beast.
Upgraded my AV40s to Rokit 8s
Selling my old (But barely used and in excellent condition) PadKontrol, I replaced it with Maschine. I'm super happy with it. I took it out of the box and only had to touch the manual once, it just meshes with my ideas well. FUN!!! I have Massive and Tassman running through it. Picking up Razor with my $30 voucher from NI.

And tomorrow is going to be a big day. My girlfriend's ex left behind a bunch of stuff when he passed away. She had it in a temp/humid controlled storage room for years and mentioned it a few times, but never really said anything. I guess there were some legal issues that needed to be cleared up before she could move the stuff out of storage. It's out and at her brother's. She wants to move it here where she's staying while she decides what to do with it. From what I understand there is TR909, 808, 606, a Jupiter 8 (not sure about this), a red aluminum devilfish modded TB303, an older Moog of some sort, and 3 gold plated 1200s and a ton of old Hardcore vinyl. But I'm not sure, I've seen the 808, 909, and 303, but the rest is just what she's told me. Should be interesting to see what's there.

Holy sh*t get on that dude. Marry that woman and stake your claim to that incredible gear.

I thought I'd posted in here but can't find it. Here goes.

This summer I'm getting an Apogee Duet as kind of a holdover for greater things. I'll continue to use my portastudio 488 as a recorder and mixer, but mix down in stereo through the Duet. I'll also use it to get Plogue Chipsounds' audio out of my computer (first softsynth! I'm excited!).

Also on the list is some kind of pad controller...either an MPD (which is cheap) that I'll use with Ableton or I may just get Maschine. One of the two. Just itchin' for some punched-in-by-hand drum programming.

I may get a Fender Rhodes as a sample source for the summer. First priority is Minerva for my Juno though.

Then this fall I'll probably spring for a Mackie 1640i Onyx mixer. Twice as many inputs as I now have...16 in 16 out firewire connectivity...the ideal bridge between my hardware gear and a whole new world of software processing and synthesis...

OR I may just get the padcontroller and an Octatrack. Never had Elektron gear so I'm intrigued.

edit: and maybe one of the jomox or vermona kick drum boxes. Then I was thinking of getting a better (than my e6400 classic) emulator sampler but probably I should just go software. we'll see.

it's a organizational mess in here.

Wow,

1. Got the SEM Pro
2. Got the Cirklon
3. Got the Eventide Eclipse
4. Got a KRK 10S Sub instead of the Adam (very nice)
5. Didn't do a studio tear down, but did do a reconfiguration and a new floor.

I just finished it off... got a Cheetah MS6.

Now, I have spent all of my gear money for the forseeable future.

no offense to PC users but my experience with PC's the last 15 years have been a nightmare.. I just don't know why I'm prone to digital viruses.. And no I don't download porn l.o.l.(shhhhh, don't tell mom k. ) but really, my computer repair guy have downloaded different types of malware, virus protection and viruses seems to penetrate my PC.. I'm just sooo over it.. So I've been shopping for one of those faster MAC laptops ...I don't want to deal with virus protection blah blah bleh...

Well nearly 6 months on from this - REALLY interesting to see (a) what I wrote and (b) how close I've come to what I planned!!

1. Loving the V-Synth XT. Haven't even dented what it's capable of though tbh. It IS a "keeper" though.
2. Kronos 61 is ordered and imminent (UK order)
3. umm, GAS got the better of me and I bought a DX7s (with a flat battery) for circa $50 heh Put a new battery in it, cleaned it up and if I was to sell it, would make a tidy profit. Put the battery on extended wires and used a battery holder.
That said, I loved this machine as a kid..... and still love it now, the action is amazing. Currently reliving all of my 80's tunes, as so many presets were used heh
4. Bought a KB covers overlay for Logic (don't "need" it persay, but it keeps the keyboard clean, and is always useful)
5. Also looking at the new Behringer Personal Monitor thingy = the P16-i & P16-m.......... love the idea of doing my own monitor mix on stage (taking the stress of our engineer!)...... really cheap too, which will probably equate to it breaking the first time I use it!

Always worth having a reflection

Then to replace the XV, I'm looking at a Fantom G (this will also replace my XP30, although, for the money they're fetching, it's not worth selling the XP)

To replace the X5dr, I'm looking at a Kronos.

I've also got some kit that got quite wet in a studio flood - so once the insurance pays out, that will also fund my new toys.

Hopefully!

- Gefell M300 (x2) (matched pair)

OTHER STUFF:

- Larrivee B-03RE (acoustic bass) (bought it already)
I also bought a pair of Avantone Active Mixcubes, a Moog Voyager RME, Expert Sleepers Silent Way, Shure SM7B and a percussion kit containing lots of small percussion instruments.

I'll most probably drop the Gefell microphones and the Cwejman S1 MK II from the list though. I've already blown most of my budget.

I'll most probably buy a second Distressor to complement the single one I currently have. I've also been trying to find a nice polyphonic analogue synth for the past 1.5 years now. It's my priority #1 at the moment, but no such luck

2011 has already been a really slutty year for me. Upgraded monitors to Adam A7X's, finally have an analog mixer with an Allen and Heath ZED R16, upgraded to Pro Tools 9, added a MKS-80, Octave Cat, and x0xb0x to the synth collection, lots of new guitar pedals (Pro Co Rat 85 Reissue, MXR Distortion Plus, a few Electro Harmonix toys).

My future 2011 plans include:
Dave Smith Tempest
Roland TR-909

Seriously lacking in the drum machine department. Time to fix that.

With all due respect, I think that unless you plan to be several feet away from the screen, that lcd will be more stressing to your eyes than, say, a 27-inch. You won't get more pixels, only bigger ones.

I would say that two 27-inch screens will even give you more desktop space and resolution than a twice-as-big 54".

Yeah its odd when people actually think big TVs offer more screen space when most of them dont. Especially not that Panasonic. A 27-30" @ 2560x1600/1920 computer monitor will hold millions of more pixels.
