I predict that NI will release a new OS for Maschine that will allow it to host plugins. How cool would THAT be?!

-AKAI MPC-K 5000 (keyboard)
I think akai will make a keyboard version of the MPC w/ virtual analogue synthesis. It will cost less than Roland and Korg.

-Korg EMX-2
Korg will release the Electribes with MS20 filter and polyphonic synth sections. It will have midi recording into its sequencer finally.

Roland - a product with Autotune, Vocoder, and sampler in one will be released.

Yamaha - nothing.

DSI - Tetrasonic Drumstation. An analogue hand drum pad with a theremin built into the rim. Has lots of digital fx.

I'm sure there will be more rebadged dreams packaged as solutions to deliver fantasy through consumerism!

Meanwhile the magical and revolutionary marketeers will be focusing on physical slogans like increased heart rate, coma, death, stroke, and the brave ones will even go so far as to incorporate loans and bankruptcy as positively framed double negatives.

As in "That keyboard was so sick it was bankrupt".

Because this theme is actually boring, like all marketing, I predict the now reclused wizards casting spells over the masses will start borrowing engrish and french-japonaise to spice the sale. As in "Such a heat it brings the cool will make you hot!" and "Enjoi relax lobot speed!".

Okay, Show of hands how many people have been to the hell that is NAMM?

If you enjoyed it, that's cool.. I'm envious. I'm a chaos buddhist and I work hard to enjoy everything, but NAMM is one of the few places I've ever sworn "never again".

If you liked it don't read further. If you're considering going, well, this is for you:

It's like a never-ending guitar center packed full of attention *****s and naive industry people with a very small group of actually socially relevant people talking business across the street at the hotel bar. We went a few years ago to promote our software, got on the a-list and enjoyed watching the failed rockstars cruise the show floor reliving their past. It seems pretty common to see Yanni or Kenny G. or whoever wandering around looking lost.

Trips to the urinal included hearing frantic producers calling friends,
"hey, you know who I saw, I saw producer X, you know who he's working with again? Siouxsie! OMG,... pause... Yeah, we're going to grab some food after".

I stood outside for hours at a time, couldn't handle the amount of pointless products and vapid fantasy of manufacturers brokering dreams to musicians while the fallout of the music business wandered right behind the oblivious freshmeat. Basically the exploitive marketing built to a crescendo and I had to get out. The after parties we went too were about as uncool as being on a 22foot sail boat at Cannes. I mean, everyone there thought it was "cool" but when cool is a public perception and there is no arbiter of style running the bridge, it's just a disaster.

The drive back to hollywood was unbelievably welcome with Disney even celebrating for us as we rolled out by firing off their usual evening fireworks display (even if it was limp).

Looking back, it was depressing. Seeing Grandmaster Flash play "NAMM" to less than 15 people (although he built a crowd cause he's cool). Seriously, he commented between the lines he never imagined being influential in the industry and being so poor he had to do NAMM clinics for whichever digital turntable software it was he was representing. Smooth guy though.. Very good communicator and of course he can always deliver and draw a crowd.

And to the guys going this year. Do light Peter G's. synth on fire if he shows up or just shoot speed with him in a parking garage. But you know, He's the focus. This year it's Peter G. as 'the fenix' or with a new one.

The next year badges showed up again and I mailed them to some random internet guy and suggested he go as DSPaudio and rep us. I told him, "say anything, sell the company, buyout Plan B. *ANYTHING* at all, just do it".

He wasn't a very good rep, I don't think we got a single contact out of the deal.

If this post caused you any stress. Consider the kind of comedy you are willing to take in normally, so just put a bit of distance between my words and your heart and all will be well. (I do this every couple years, it's cyclical). Ohh and Peter, You never made it for that rumble, but it's cool PM me.

Ohh letter to the NAMM planners. Move it to vegas, put it inside a casino, directly... That would at least make it an interesting social experiment.

Confusingly,
Anthony Bisset

Great post, Hunter!

Living the dream so we might not have to.

Yeah, those NAMM demo performance whatzits always look like you'd need just the right combination of meth, X, and Yukon Jack to sit there and get something out of them amongst the din and kitsch of it all.

Since Ableton will not be at NAMM I doubt there will be an update. I am still waiting for SHARE for Live 8, which is almost 2 years overdue.
you can attach a tetra and get 5 voices can't you? that at least gets you an octave bass and a triad. Thats my reservation about getting the poly evolver, Should be at least 5 voices in a poly imo.

One word: Octatrack

Elektron will be dropping the only bomb worth seeing this year:

YouTube - Octatrack - A Machine That Makes Music?

And unlike other vendors, they are not keeping it under wraps prior to the show...they've laid out the structure, features, and sounds well in advance.

I've said it before in interviews recently, and I'll say it again: in 30 years, it will be the 'new 303'. And for all the guitar players reading this... the whole game just changed. As a VP9000 user in the past, I always imagined and wanted something exactly like this. And go figure, leave it to Elektron to not only design it....but deliver it, in just three short years...

Elektron dropping bombs on yer moms this year.... sampling just got redonkulously musical again!

I was very disappointed with the Octratrack features! Ableton+Controller=Better in my opinion. Here's hoping for iPad MPC 2500!

Heh. Err, you do know that was shown at Messe 9 months ago right? I think your post must have gotten caught in a Hot Tub Time Machine.

Yeah...but I don't want to deal with all those output cables. 4 voice Mopho with stereo outs, or a Tetra keyboard with 32 keys and 4 voices with stereo outs.

DSI - I'm seriously hoping this is a sampler of some sort, with analog filter and amp stages. A keyboard or drum sampler would make me very happy, either one. Dave has sampler history with the Prophet 2000 and Studio 440 so it wouldn't be a stretch. The Nord Wave, Waldorf Blofeld, Korg Microsampler and Elektron Octatrack have all shown a renewed interest in sampling beyond Akai's standard boxes. The new LinnDrum seems stuck in limbo so maybe DSI took their half and ran with it.

Roland will release another Juno that re-includes the old Juno-G MIDI sequencer but lacks some other basic element of the Juno series and will sell for twice the price. My guess is it will lack keys.

Honestly I hate companies that butcher flagship products to make cheap spinoffs that DON'T include the combination of features that people want in hopes of dickering a few idiots and increasing flagship sales.

I also think Roland is half ******** for thinking anyone is going to mix a whole song into a Juno keyboard.

Some time (couple of years I guess) ago the statement from DSI was that the LinnDrum 2 was more a sort of beat oriented product and thus was better covered by Roger Linn Design, with DSI still focusing on synthesis.

Ofcourse opinions can change.

Also, someone brought up the idea of the Korg EMX-2. But I doubt Korg would release a new model so shortly after having upgraded the original ones with SD card slots.

Rumor has it I will be at the NAMM show, carrying a special pen for anyone who wants me to sign their copy of Zen and the Art of Mixing and/or The Daily Adventures of Mixerman. So, bring it along and use Twitter and/or The Mixerman FB Page to locate me. They both push to my phone.

Oh, and if there's a GS get together of any kind, I would love to meet some of you!

Enjoy,

iMPC hardware to hookup to ipod is my dream. The akai ipk25 was a failure, but if done right it would be awesome. Good software with fully functional sequencer, well made pads and solid slim case, niceish converters, wifi midi in addition to regular midi ports, wifi sample transfer, aa battery power, paste board integration with other iOS software, blue tooth sample and midi file sharing with other idevices, drawable envelopes and velocity ie use the touchscreen where it makes sense, if there's power left integrated effects and synth. I'm not sure how much Apple's rules get in the way and prevent this, but if possible/needed 512 ram for holding samples and a usb port for hooking up things like portable keyboards, nanocontrol, etc. Keep it cheap and add in app sample pack purchases. You're welcome Akai
