Comparison of 5 moog-like analogs - which one you like best? (RESULTS)

ok chaps, i've made some completely unscientific comparison demos od five analog boards going after typical moog or moog-ish tone and character. i've borrowed several pieces, and had em in my studio over a month's time. and here's the result of my twiddling, in 24Bit audio glory.. have fun..

*edit mar15 2011: removed 24bit versions.. look below for 16bit..

abbreviations used:

SQR1VCO.......unfiltered single vco square
SQR1VCO+FILT..same as above, 24dB filter tweaking, resonance zero
SQR1VCO+RESO..same as above, but with medium high resonance
SAW1VCO-BASS..single vco saw, bass line. attacks zero, typical expo decay
OCTAVES.......vco1 saw, vco2 semi-narrow pulse octave higher, expo filter decay
SELFOSC.......same as above, but resonance to the max, slow attack and decay
8VE-FIZZ......same as above, reso 85%, medium attack and decay

you vote for the synth you liked best doing moog-type sound, since this was the intent with gear used, or, if you don't have experience with moogs or don't care for them, just vote which synth you liked best of the five offered. it's all good.

if you have a tie, i.e. dig two equally - i allowed the poll to have multiple choices. if you want to rank them by preference, you are more than welcome to do so in your posts. before i disclose which is which, i can add up these votes too.

EDIT: for those with slower connections, i added a 16bit version. its twice as small (45mb instead of 97). its grouped per examples, not per synth this time:

SQR1VCO-16bit
SQR1VCO+FILT-16bit
SQR1VCO+RESO-16bit
SAW1VCO-BASS-16bit
OCTAVES-16bit
SELFOSC-16bit
8VE-FIZZ-16bit

EDIT: ok gentlemen, time for official poll results ..

in addition, as an alternative view on the results, i have added all individual posts where you ranked all five, from 41 members. and here's what came out:

enjoy heh

B
C, but the pulse was a bit odd sounding to me

then i cant decide, E sounded weak for the saw and the octaves, but the pulse was nice. A was ok, a bit in the middle, nothing too bad about it, nothing too good. D had nice octaves..

fizz: a,d
octaves: b,d
saw: b,c
self-osc: a
sqr+filt+res: c, e

that doesn't really help, does it?

Nice shootout!

They sound awefully similar :D

I haven't read the other replies.

E sounds soft and vintagy while A and C sound more boom and modern. B is a tad nasal. D might fit a busy mix better than most but doesn't sound so big on it's own.

I think it would make sense to hear a mix with drums etc. featuring two or three of the samples from each synth.

ok for me there wasn't much in it between A and C for the best sounding
yes they were different but both sounded real sweet to me.

i voted A as my top choice but C is very close behind. tomorrow i might like C better. they sound fantastic to me. super fat. C was a little more stable (in a good way) and because of that A sounded more alive in comparrison.

D was OK sounding very much let down by a weak sounding filter in SQR1VCO+RESO

both B and E sounded nasty to me like not just the bottom of the pile but in a lower league. i actually found them unpleasant. worst of all for me was E

so my ranking looks like
____
A
C
----- both awesome sounding

_____
D
----- not bad

____
B
E
----- sound like ****

cool, thanks for participating.

btw you know, you could have voted both A and C if u wanted so, since this poll is setup to allow for that.

yea i know

i do rank A the highest so that's fine.

tell me something is one of them an LP? or voyager?

if so i know it can't be A, that has vintage written all over it. but i would be impressed if it were C.
is there a yamaha in there? if so i would guess D is the yamaha. and what ever B and E is please tell me so i never have to go near them!

funny isnt it - i liked the sound of B - im listening on sennheiser hd25s, but i really liked the definition of the sound, the punch of the pulses i really liked - im hoping its a modern analogue (i like my mod cons!) - clip A sounded most 'moog sound' to me.

E sounded nasty for sure.

also im going to test on my hi-fi, which is very high end, maybe my choices will change when i get to hear it without being on 'phones?

great poll btw

I really don't know, they're all playing different thing and quite complex so it's difficult to judge. I do like A

Is this one of those polls where 4/5 turn out to be digital emulations after?

I also never read the stickies usually. probably more people would post if it was just top of the normal threads?

C sounds the most Moogish (oscillator volume dips severely because resonance pushes it away), and I can't get rid of the idea that "A" is a Roland. I like A the best, then C.

great thread.....
i like best C ( to my ears this is the moog sound)
next in rank was D (to me it sounds like a 303 btw)
sorry 4 my bad english.. not my everyday lang.

thanks yozzer and federico for participating

@goldenbeers & rasseru: yeah i realized that as well, i just shot an email to don to perhaps better un-sticky it..

most ppl here, including me, dont check stickies that much.. except the gear p0rn thread which is always on top. others are kinda lost amidst the cluster of stickies.

I actually think it's quite striking how similar they sound to each other.

B and E are slightly different. I like the octave sound from B.

Otherwise A and C are possibly slightly smoother than the others,

I've made rankings in every "catergory", from 1 to 5, 5 beeing the highest grade.

A - 29 points
B - 30 points
C - 11 points
D - 19 points
E - 16 points

So, B is my fav!

So, everyone hates E! Granted, it is not so solid in the deep bass and sparkly in the resonance, but E is certainly not unpleasant in the highs with it's slightly subdued vintagy tone and wollen edges. But ok, I guess it doesn't excactly have the Mini sound.
