My tiny setup, this is the space in a 1-bedroom flat that 600 quid/$1200 a month rent gets you in Brighton, UK... crammed into my little bedroom.

There's a few analogues in there somewhere, I promise.

Id just moved in, don't worry Ive set the monitors up a bit better now, I had a lot more room where I was before so 8 inch tapcos seemed like a good idea.

Ouch. I'm amazed at how different living expenses are around the world. And then, some stuff like music gear can be pretty expensive in those countries with a lower per-capita income.

Yeah it is bonkers, a total kick in the balls.
Unfortunately Brighton is one of the only urban areas of the UK that's genuinely inhabitable to humans. Personally, its either here or London.

In fact Britain in general is insane, prices-wise. But Brighton has one of the highest cost of living to wages ratios even here. I need to move somewhere else. Any ideas?

Not Sydney! We pay even more here.. It's completely insane!
Their is a HUGE shortage of properties for rent right now.
On the news last night they said there is currently a total of 730 places for rent on the market..
With a population of over 4 million, that is nothing!
I've read that we're supposed to be the worst city in the world for relative rental prices vs our average income.. Sucks!

That was pretty much debunked straight away I'm afraid.
That figure was put forward by a property lobby group pushing for lower stamp duty.
Actually there are over 20,000 properties available in Sydney.

Well either way - our rental prices are insane and I've seen the huge demand vs lack of supply first hand.. You are going up against dozens of potential tenants every time you apply for a decent place, and on top of that the prices have sky-rocketed.

Anywayz, less chit chat more synth porn!

I just won a Poly-800 mkII for about $200, shipping included. I guess it counts as an hybrid, although I'm pretty sure its oscillators are analog (DCO).

Anyway, I've owned a Poly-800 (and EX-800) before and they're fun and capable of decent bass. A bit tedious to program, though.

I nearly bought a Mopho from Novamusik last friday but I fell back into my senses at the last minute. I already have enough synths that require PC editors (G2, FS1R, Wavestation), and I really don't want another one. What I do need, actually, are some good analog drums, so I may be buying a Vermona DRM-1 mkIII in a couple months.

Nice setup! Yah us new yorkers aren't the only ones who have it bad... And I've thought of moving to the UK (been once, was great), I guess I have expensive tastes.

1200US would be a good deal for a studio apartment in any decent NYC suburbs neighborhood, and in Manhattan, anything liveable for below $1800/ a month is rare. $3000-$4000 a month for a one bedroom in a nice Manhattan doorman/elevator building is about standard... With nice sound isolation for a studio (that would be a dream... I've seen some awesome project and pro studio's in nice Manhattan apartment buildings).

Who knows though, maybe with all this wall st people losing their jobs, the city will get affordable

I pay $595 for a large-ish one bedroom apartment in a nice neighborhood in West Philadelphia. I have a washer and dryer (free) in the basement and a fenced in backyard that's easily the size of my apartment. Have fun with that Manhattan closet for $3000 a month bull$hit!

P.S. There's much more interesting stuff going on in my neighborhood than there is in Manhattan, unless you're all about fashion shows and $1k a plate benefit dinners

Dragging it back on topic slightly.....
The price of gear in the UK is outrageous, in Australia outrageous++.

The USA is pretty cheap for living IME, and gear is very competitively priced.
Most of my analogue collection came out of EbayUSA.
Move to the UK at your peril.

Why is that? There are many people in the world with larger setups for various reasons, myself included. We gravitate towards places like this on the web. Not surprising eh?I posted pics of about 35 of my 80 synths a few pages back. There are many reasons that people don't like to post pics : Thieves, negative commentary usually from people who don't have a lot of gear, lack of web experience/digital camera, just couldn't be bothered etc. Typing in a list is way easier and most of us have seen most of the synths out there anyway.

When the Sunsyn gets some TLC from Michaelis, then it will feel very slutty. Who am I kidding? I've crossed well over into gear***** territory.

Edit, huh, my first asterisked post.

Hey, JAM, how's it going?

I've exploited the weak dollar whilst living in Ireland this past year. Almost all of my kit is in a friend's studio outside Chicago. I'll have to figure out what to do with it all when I return - set up shop somewhere in the US or move it all back to Eire.

One question for all you guys with a ton of vintage synths: how do you keep it working and how much does it cost you (to keep it working)?

I've had my share of vintage gear (Juno 106, Moog Prodigy, etc), and all of them developed issues at some point (dead voices, unstability, whatever). It was impossible to find someone (in Mexico) who could service them so I ended up selling them while they were still worth something. Right now, the oldest piece I own is my ESQ-1, which has its own issues (e.g., the cartridge port doesn't work well anymore). I'm always tempted to buy vintage synths, but I'm also very wary of them, and because of this, I'm leaning more towards newer synths.
