Behringer Phat 108 - A Concept Analog Poly Synth?

Over at Amazona.de, a large German Music Production site, they've been running a bit of a concept experiment.

Various question were asked about what kind of analogue synths the voters would buy. 52 of the 4658 voters picked at random we assume, received a refurbished Juno 60, a pair of Behringer TRUTH B3031A active monitors, or one of 50 Amazona Ts.

More questions were also asked:

Assuming you could get a classic analogue with modern features like usb/midi/transmitting of controller data/etc. would you buy one within the next 3months. If so, what model?

To get the juices flowing, Behringer also contributed a concept design, in the form of a series of images of a fictional synth - namely the Phat 108

Interesting? Perhaps they are indeed contemplating entering the synthesizer market, and to be fair, the number of people who cite the classic Juno polysynth as one of the holy grails of affordable synthesis, may provide Behringer with enough of a market to actually go ahead - but of course, that is speculation. But I'd say that looks a lot like market research to me..

From analog heaven today:

"To my knowledge this was a joke by Uli Behringer. He is a friend of the amazona editor Peter Grandl (former importer of Akai Germany). Amazona did some research whether a true analogue polyphonic synth with keyboard and fully knobbed interface for a street price below 500 Euros would be economically reasonable (I am not sure, whether this research wasn't intended already as a marketing blob). Uli Behringer did not participate himself in the discussion but sent messages via Peter Grandl. Also he sent this photoshop'ed Juno60.

Sorry guys but it really was public kidding inside a small group of adults ... as far as all we synth addicts can be called adult :-)"

Ever since this image started to circulate, I've wondered if Behringer would ever entertain the idea of going into synthesis. According to one of their catalogs, the first thing Uli ever built was the UB-1 synthesizer, so it isn't like he hasn't had experience in this area. Plus their digital pianos basically are simplified synthesizers. Still... wouldn't it be entertaining to see them come out with their own line of modular synths? heh
