congratulations !!!

some of my favorite records were made with this board (like Peter Gabriel IV, Mike Odlfield "Five Miles Out/Crises/Discovery", Kate Bush "Hounds Of Love", Zoolok etc)

its one board that has been on my wishlist forever. but its just too damn big to ship from anywhere esp overseas form US, and there never was one in the vicinity. also i'm kinda scared of vintage digital if it breaks down. with analogs i know there is always a way somehow, but with proprietary old memory and dsp.. it scares me. tho id buy it anyway if it was arround, for a decent price.

so, let's se some pictures. i dare ask a demo would be even better

cheers

Will do, both pics and some demos... next week I'm wiring the new studio (whole new patchbay) and the Fairlight will be a big part of the new set-up! I'll get it up and running, then take some pics and share some sounds with you all.

Thanks!

Congrats, I used to work on a CMI III, which was much fun. Also have a look at the Fairlight user group at Yahoo.

Congratulations on your purchase!

I have the sample library of the CMI IIx on a CD. I bought it long time ago, never really used it that much and there was very sparse info inside.

However, I have found many easily recognizable sounds here and there...

i have a feeling you are talking about samples OF Fairlight i.e. its playback. meant to be used with other sampler and/or kontakt etc..

andrews is asking about original or old sample libs FOR Fairlight, in its own proprietary format.

or im missing something?

Yep, you got it. I too had that sample CD at one point, but it doesn't really do the Fairlight much justice because so much of the sound IS the Fairlight, FWIW. Thank you though... I don't want that to come off as anything other than appreciative!

Thanks guys.

And yes, if any other Fairlight users out there have Fairlight libraries out there and want to sell/trade... lemme know!

Does anyone know if Fairlight III sounds/libraries can be used on a Fairlight IIx? That would be hugely helpful!!!

Highest regards,

Andrews

question for halo and mikesilence

I'm assuming CM III was the last and best fairlight in terms of features functionality?

was there anything iix had that iii didn't and vice versa?

halo any reason u got a iix and not a iii? if money wasn't an object would u still have gotten a iix?

Wasn't the Fairlight one of the few samplers that didn't 'resample' everything in real time to get the pitch.

What I mean is is had dedicated circuits for each voice. So when you played a sample slower, it was actually playing the audio slower rather than todays samplers (I could be wrong here), that play it back slower but are locked at a sample rate of say 44khz so they resample everything.

Am I wrong? I do love the sound of those old samplers.

No, a IIx cannot read CMI3 sounds, but the opposite is possible, but you don't benefit
of the IIx output filters in that case.

I have a IIx, but not the complete sounds library, but a friend of mine has it.
Have to ask him...
You have to find 8" floppies

If you have other questions

Cheers,

Eric.

Andrews,

2 little advices

- place the mainframe in a aery place or better in a cooling room, the inside cards will be grateful. (dead )

- check the voltage of the battery in the Q133 card, if it is lower that 3,7Volts, change it.
Otherwise you gonna have some surprises when the battery will start to "flow" and damage the other next cards.

How did you put the mainframe, verticaly or horizontaly ?

If the mainframe seemes to be too noisy, there is a little upgrade, just
change the 30 fans

Have you try to sample/analyse with it ?

Do you enjoy this old lady ? heh

Cheers,

Eric.

Hey Andrews, I have some of the stock samples in mine. I only have an optical drive for backup so not sure how I would get them out. I do know Fairlight Australia has the full catalogue. My partner here is a co-owner of Fairlight Australia. We have a bunch of the string sample multitracks out the back in the safe....

CMI Remake

It seems Fairlight is remaking the CMI along with keyboard and green screen.

Will use FPG tech only 100 made at 26k each.

Will be able to use series II and III sounds.

Should be awesome.
