If you guys haven't, check out the Ghetto Tracks doccu on youtube. You can do some gear spotting in DJ Funks studio. I see MPC3000, R8, and MC-303. Doesn't mean anything about the earlier records, but fun to watch... NOT AT WORK!!! lol

I watched that a while ago. It looked like an MPC60 mk2 in Funks studio. Never noticed the 3000.

I've got a SX700 I keep around for those "****ty"
90s FX. Plus the RSS. I'll have to see if I can
get the same effect with that. I'm surprised some
of the included FX in DAWs can't do it... or something
like Cycling 74.

Pretty sure I can get similar stuff in my Lexicon
Vortex too, but I don't think that was in use on those
records.

Some plug in effects can come close but I cant get the texture the way I like it. I get closest with PSP Nitro and the PSP42 delay but they sound a bit thin and zippy,
By Cycling 74 do you mean Max/MSP ? That seems kind of overkill for a flanger.

I had an SX700 years ago and sold it. It was ok but I don't miss it.

I have an R8 MK1 to keep my 909 company, but I don't enjoy using it so much. I mainly just use it for the shakers and percussion sounds from the contemporary percussion card.
before i sold the R8mk2, i sampled every sound. when i power on my MPC, it loads up several drum programs. i have an R-8mk2 program with every sound but not all of them are mapped to pads.

http://asciibaron.dyndns.org/test/R-8_mk2.zip heh

did you all notice the R-8 in front of the MC-303 in that vid? and a 106. those things are everywhere.

I've seen Funk a few times. One time it was supposed to be a live set. All it was was him on an MCheese-303 and then into a DJ set. And a not too impressive DJ set at that.

I was cool with Ghetto House back in 95 when it all started coming out. But it grew old pretty quick once everyone started using the same samples and basic track structures. I had a nice pile of the original ghetto records that i sold off for $40 that's probably worth a small fortune now. But i still have my DJ Funk Club Tracks record, that's a great one =o]

Sounds like a sampled string/pad chord.

this is one of those threads that i wish would just go on and on. couple of sounds i've always tried to get but never quite..

this sound was all over the place in the 80's/early 90's

mr fingers aka larry heard's metallic, hollow yet fat as f**k bass... i'm guessing it has something to with square waves and filter resonance.. i've come close but never managed to get something quite as satisfying sounding as this one.

classic track.

what synth did cybotron's clear arpeggio come from?

00:27

i could listen to that arp on loop for hours

i'll leave it at those 2 for now but i might be back for more later.

Derrick used a Yamaha DX100.
You can also get the exact same sound out of a Yamaha PSS-680 or 780. It's quite a simple 2op FM sound but also brilliant!

True.

About every Detroit techno producer used DX100. It was a standard just like TR-909.

i dont know but ' if you didnt know he likes pro-ones:

"The Pro One is my heart. I'll use that Pro One until it falls apart, and then I'll probably still use it if it makes any sounds."

im sure theres another quote about 2 pro-ones and a drum machine being all you need, but that might be in the a-z of synth books, i cant remember

I've no idea, but I've recreated it with NI Massive heh (cue whining about lack of fatness, ITB sound, blah blah)

Lots of interesting modulation going on there, almost Shepard-tone like.

To make old techno house all you need is a sampler, a TB-303, and a 909. You have to get the right groove going. Don't over think it.

Man I'm really lovin this. Back in the day when this stuff was new I wanted to make it but I didn't have the equipment. Now 20 years later I have the hardware and I'm taking a production journey back, making stuff I would have had I had the gear.

On the last track I made I was being super consciences of my technique. i would think, was anybody doing that yet? No, then it's out lol. Real "time pieces" haha.

Im also drawing inspiration, exploring older techniques.

The sequencer is fine. Sort of like the Yamahas. Every time you hit a pad, it advances the sequencer one step in step mode. Hit the NEXT button to skip steps. Easy enough.

recommendations for classic/detroit techno

Hi all,

Last year I got really turned on to the whole "techno" genre by hearing music by drexciya and arpanet, which completely blew my mind with its originality and sound. Fast forward a year and I haven't really found any other stuff in this genre that I like as much, and I figure it's because I don't know the right place to look! What is some great classic techno, maybe similar to the aforementioned artists?

I did some research, and found that I liked Carl Craig, and also Paperclip People, Lab rat XL. I also enjoy dopplereffekt, though it is a little too dry for me sometimes. Nothing else has really blown my socks off like drex did though!

and sorry if i'm getting genre names mixed up here, I can't ever keep this stuff straight
