Just returned :)

This place is absolutely a must see!
They HAD two Klaus Schulze Tokyo Tour posters on their wall. (My hero BTW)
They were mind blowingly kind enough to take them down and clean up the two sided tape off the back, roll them up and put them in a tube for my journey back to Canada. I was almost in tears!
I bought a Dave Smiths instrument T-shirt, felt bad not spending more due to their gracious generosity.

Tokyo was mind altering and the people were beyond imagination.

Those two posters were the highlight of a 19 day trip through Malaysia Thailand and Japan. Someone once said the best things in life are free right? THEY knew what they were talking about!

Thanks 5G if you read this! THANKS SO MUCH! Go see it, its beyond words.

Nice bump!

Wish I'd known about this place before. Definitely visiting next time I'm over... although there is no chance I'll be able to afford anything!

Johnny,

Thanks for the pics, man! 3 questions about 5G I hope you can answer:

1. Do they speak English?

2. Do they ship?

3. Any chance of there being an English version of their website?

Thanks

I think even their disclaimer on the web page says that for purchase you can only contact them from within Japan. If it's gone, then perhaps they changed the policy.

Visited Five G back in late 2007. Considering that in my normal part of the world, there is nothing but Guitar Center for hundreds of miles, Five G was like a pilgrimage to the promised land. I spent several hours there and went back for more the next day.

It was a bit hard to find the first time. I didn't have the aid of the directions posted in this thread (which are spot-on, by the way). The location is convenient for tourists, though. It's just a few steps to the Harajuku bridge that's the focus of the Sunday freakshow. Across the bridge, you can find both the Meiji shrine and museum to the right. To the left, Yoyogi Park. On the other end of Yoyogi park is a reflecting pool opposite a long footbridge. Across the footbridge is a paved area where there's an occasional swap meet (mostly clothes and household items). When I visited the swap meet, there was a live band playing in the nearby ampitheater.

In the other direction from Five G is Take****a street, which I've been told is well-known for its fashion stores. It wasn't my cup of tea, but at least was a gold mine for my "engrish" photo collection.

Didn't know about echigoya at the time. I'll make sure to see it on my next visit.

One more image from 5G Tokyo store that i like:

As of the price shown in JPY, that pic was taken in 03/2008, so that would be 1900 EUR. Has midi. Side panels have been fixed. Oh, i almost forgot. It became mine. That's why i like that pic. heh

@Don Solaris:
How did you ship it home? I'm thinking of visiting 5G sometime in the future and I've no idea what's the best way to get all the gear back home to different country.

I've bought 2 synths there and have been there many times.

In terms of finding it, It's across the street from the Yamanote line but they have 2 exits, so while the other won't be like on the wrong side of town, the building and even door isn't completely obvious. I remember suGar from Buffalo Daughter took me there the first time, and then I think next time I went I couldn't find it, and that's the sort of thing I can usually do... but I did eventually figure it out.

As for buying stuff, this was a couple years ago but I presume nothing has changed. You can not order from the internet. I don't know if they did once and had too many sour deals or it's a holdover from a decade ago when Japanese merchants could only honor physical foreign credit cards, not phone or net processing. Anyway what you can do is walk in, pay and have them ship it Express Mail - rates here - Rate schedule(EMS?All Zones) - Japan Post

The other unusual policy that makes sense once you think about it. They put gear on the floor after it's been diagnosed but before it is repaired. So if you buy gear with an issue it gets priority for a repair, but it won't happen that day. You can also opt for taking it as is but the discount is tiny, like 5%. Not all of the gear is waiting for a repair, but keep that in mind before you expect to walk out with something. If you have some help from a friend or figure out how to read the characters, you can see the still being repaired note on the individual items.

As for prices, I'd say they kind of set the vintage gear prices on the better stuff for Japan. Compared to the N.America or Europe that depends. Common units one place are not common in another though suitcase packable stuff quickly levels out extreme differences. It's definitely supply and demand. Stuff no one thinks is hot in Japan can be real cheap and quite the opposite. I think FiveG can effectively call the shots on what an MS-50 goes for or a System 100M since they are not plentiful. Something like a CS-10 or an SH-2 they really can't influence the market since there are plenty around.

After converting the prices in dollars, Echigoya is no bargain, that's for sure.

The yen these days tends to be 80 to a dollar which is slightly better than the worst in history but not at all friendly and unavoidable. Locally it's obviously supply and demand on vintage gear. Stuff a lot of people want and not so many people are selling is surely pricey. The pretty obvious secret to gear bargains is to get vintage stuff no one wants in Japan but is more rare and coveted where you live. But of course I'm not the only one thinking that way and there are always a couple internet/ebay resellers snapping up stuff locally because it goes for profitable money shipped outside of Japan.

I just visited this store yesterday and have to say I wasn't impressed. Most of the stuff was in pretty bad condition and aside from a few JP-8s, Prophets and System 700s there wasn't anything amazing. And all the good stuff was "reserved" so you couldn't buy it anyway. I tend to buy only mint/near-mint gear and nothing in that shop would have been in the shape I wanted.

I went in October. Its not that easy to find you have to get to the 4th floor on the lift. Its pretty much Harajuku station straightout and over the road and your first right into a small shopping centre.

Worth going if you want see and play around on the synths but the prices are high because of the high yen.

I went to Five G this weekend with my wife. Very disappointed all around. I had gotten a foreign transaction free card (I live in the US, my wife is Japanese) specifically for the trip to 5G so I could purchase a few items we had called in advance about. (had planned on spending +- 2 mil Y.) When we arrived, there were three people behind the counter playing with various drum machines. We spent over an hour looking around (which, in that small of a store, is a LONG time) - half the items on display were reserved (which is fine, good that business is good, I suppose). However, maybe it's my stubbornness, but Im not going to hand someone 20,000USD, handle my own shipping (because that is not a service they provide, which, again is fine), and be treated like an intruder (again, no one spoke to or otherwise acknowledged us in the hour we were in the store looking around, even when we tried to get a salesperson's attention). Also, the items we called about a few hours prior to making the three hour trip to Tokyo from Tochigi were not available (I could understand if one piece sold, but not all three of the pieces we enquired about). The pieces the were on display (with the exception of a very good price of a new Ms20) were about 20% higher than the same pieces in the US (DSI was particularly expensive) The dictated vintage pieces were about equal to buying from a specialist in the US (which is fine - I don't mind paying for properly serviced vintage pieces.).

In all, The inventory in my own studio was larger than 5G, I was taken aback (as was my wife,) who though they were extraordinarily rude in their ignoring of our presence and by the limited inventory.

This wasn't my first time to 5G - I had made a special trip in 2010 and hoped things would've improved. I was wrong. Five G might have some nice thing to look at, but they didn't have anything I couldn't get for much less in the US (new pieces) or that weren't comparable to a dealer service item (used) in the US. The "pilgrimage" and "mystical synth land" has been totally wiped blank for me. Came home, pre-ordered a few modules.

Hi everyone,

Thank you very for providing amazingly detailed responses to this thread. I've found them to be extremely helpful.

I'm so excited and the fact that the shop was closed upon arrival only serves as wonderful extra colour to a heavenly day ahead.

The shop won't open for another hour (midday - 8pm).
At this point I have only looked through the window. Mmmmmmm

It's easy to find thanks to the photos provided on page 2

I'd also like to say here that if anybody would like accompanying for their trip I am free on the weekends to help.

I'll try and post up photos to keep the thread current and active.

I wonder why the shop won't ship. I'll ask my wife why that could be as she is Japanese. I'm sure we could come to an arrangement if there are any synths you guys would like.

Japan in general is mesmeric in terms of second hand goods. My main go to's are the awkwardly named and pretty well known Hard-Off's. And I'm 100% sure that when it says junk it means junk in Japanese terms which is completely different to any other countries idea of junk. The Japanese are meticulous in every way. They also live to work therefore buy things they don't need only to sell them a bit later on UNUSED!

A recent purchase of a reel-to-reel in the 'junk' section of the Hard-Off by where I live is perfect apart from spots of rust.

Sorry for my long message and thanks for reading.

I'm going to be in Tokyo next month for cherry blossom season; I'm looking forward to going back to 5G with much more time on my hands than last time (Tokyo is massive and it's easy to just spend hours walking the streets gawking at everything) and some money in my pocket. Good times.

Not at all, I've been opening my presents before Christmas Day since I was old enough to use sellotape.

All I can say is, I'm gonna need a bigger suitcase!

According to image 7, the price of the MS-20M +SQ-1 is ¥108,000, which is about £586.00. Thomann have it listed for £869 Korg pro MS-20M Kit + SQ-1 - Thomann UK

This seems too cheap to be true, or am I missing something really obvious? Would it work in UK (Hong Kong where I am currently located can use UK electronics with no problem).

Love Five G. I go there every time I visit Tokyo — which is just twice, so far.

Bonus points: something to do while the daughter wastes all day in the Take****a-dori fashion shops.

prices are usually listed without tax. don't know if that's the case at five g as well but worth mentioning. it might just be the korg stuff is super cheap there. heading over in 3 weeks as well.
