October 2020 New Gear Thread

Didn't see anyone else start it, so I'll do it.

Got an Akai MIDI Digital Delay unit. More of a harmonizer, than a delay. Should be interesting.

I was about to sell some gear, and instead I bought this.

Cool, floppies. What’s the shiny thing next to the floppy?

Despite owning a TS-10, I was able to find an SD-1 for really cheap and in surprisingly good condition. I don't know how much overlap these two have but being a gearslut, always buy, never think!

I've heard the SD-1 fixes all the reliability issues with the VFX? I found it still gets pretty warm out back but I don't leave it on all the time.

Built a 2 bay rack and got it wired today. Not fancy but it's filled with lots of not fancy gear.

Nice. Someday I plan on making some rack cabinets and traps/panels for room treatment. What kind of wood did you use?

I have quite a few upper end reverb pedal’s such as Eventide, Ventris, and some wild child EQD ones, all of which are dedicated to various instruments and that’s fine but I just over the last week reconfigured my three voice evolver array which is controlled by a mono evolver keyboard and I have the sum of those voices coming out to an earthquaker device avalanche run but what I found I lacked was just a general purpose reverb after that avalanche run.
Oh the lexicon does have a send/return going to my rack mixer but that just wasn’t doing it for me for the evolver.
A friend of mine picked up this cheap thing off of Amazon and I was really surprised at how nice it sounded and how tweakable it is for 49 bucks I thought hell I am ordering that so there you go. It was important that the pedal have stereo input but cheap. It’s also Evolver led blinding blue.

I also made a vat of vegan chili and cornbread, so there’s guaranteed to be more gas needing squashed soon

That’s the Evolver array.

It's just pine project panels from Lowes which was me being lazy and impatient. I have a full woodworking setup, could have made something much nicer, and am wishing now I took the extra time. They worked fine, though. The black paint is another lazy effort. I have all kinds of nice finishes in the shop and just didn't feel like the effort so I used spray shellac to seal the wood and black spray enamel for paint.

Curious why you chose this over the MV-8800? Price? Floppy drive? Other?

Similarity. I've had both and literally the only difference between the two is the color screen, so why pay more for a feature that makes no difference to me.

Basically all of the ones with poly aftertouch after the VFX got fixed. The VFX-SD was the start of it, though the real fix was just better soldering.

Still looks good though. I already got the tools, just deciding what wood to get. I'd like to stain it all and add a nice polyurethane.
I'd like to try making some rack cabinets out of acrylic. Like a clear rack cabinet would look effing cool.

That thread would be too massive for casual browsing, then. Imagine the Gear Porn thread times a thousand. That's a one with three zeroes behind it, kind of like Metallica. It's a lot!

Fair enough. I decided on the MV-8800 because I wanted to hook a VGA monitor and mouse up to it and don't care about the floppy drive. Given the price difference these days it makes more sense to get the MV-8000 if you don't plan on using a monitor.

My current MPC stand will go to the MV-8000, and I'm gonna put the MPC-X on this sucker to roll around the modular. Wee!

I've already wiped the presets and tonight will start abusing all those wonderful sound design tools that I didn't fully grasp the first time around. Never thought I'd see a desktop Radias in my budget ever again. Such an unexpected surprise, I'm over the flippin' moon!

I didn't like the monitor thing when I was working with the 8800. It's too DAW-like, and that's what I was trying to get away from. Plus if I change my mind, the VGA expansion is easy to come by.

Though speaking of MV expansions, did you see that somebody on eBay has figured out how to make the OP-1 expansion? I can scarcely believe how hard to find that thing was before.

Nice, yea the pine panels are easy to work with but finishing is kind of a pain. Nothing looked even on them, I did some testing, and what worked best and seemed the way to go was sealing with shellac, staining with a gel stain, and coating with an oil topcoat since the gel stains are oil based. I didn't want to wait a month for an oil coat to cure so I just painted.

If I were to do it again, and I will since this is a temporary space, I'd mill and join some hardwood to make big enough panels or use hardwood plywood and edge banding. Both those will finish much nicer and be more durable. I'm kind of trash talking my own work but really I'm just hesitant to suggest making something like this out of pine. The Nice-Racks guy makes his out of pine I think and doesn't seem to have any problems, though. It works and would be super easy for someone who doesn't have many tools or much space but after having done it I wouldn't again.

Also acrylic would be crazy, I vote you do that just so I can see the result.

Plus the feeling of bragging rights to start the next months new gear thread. Only thing to top that is that person that just blew $10k+ in that month, they usually are deemed the "winners".

Got a 2nd pair of MSP5's, £100 the pair, lol! That's £500 worth of monitors for £100...

That's not the full set up, I've just been sampling into the Digitakt a lot and removed the other bits.

Snagged a second rackmount Mirage, replacements for the Keyboard version I sold recently to free up some space.

Now I have a Mirage dedicated for Keys, and another one that will be dedicated to my Percussion rig.

May mod the Percussion one to have 8x Outs. Already have a spare Floppy/SD Emulator drive waiting, too. Plugs right in.

Vintage Lo-Fi Sampler GAS: Done, x2. Cheap, too.

Cool setup. I'd like to get a sampler, but still unsure if I want a rack, synth or a tabletop unit. So many choices. Got a fairly small midi controller for a rack and a 2nd tier if I get a synth.
