Regarding the colours, strangely I think the GM looks better in black, but the Matriarch looks better in colour.
The black GM looks like a CS-5 or Polyvoks.
Maybe it was just a bad session?
I'd imagine it also depends upon one's expectations going in. For example, I'd bet most, myself included, couldn't tell the difference between a Voyager and Matriarch, given similar sounding patches setup to be indistinguishable. Perhaps the GM as well, although I've never played one. But, at a certain point, it becomes an exercise in sonic subtleties.
For me, the Matriarch demands more time. It's not a synth that one can just switch between presets every minute or so. In that sense, taking advantage of its patching flexibility to discover new or unique sonic territories, inherently takes time. But, on its basic oscillator > mixer > filter level, its raw Moog mono/para synth sound is about as good as it gets, even beyond its price range and form factor, imo. It's a winning synth voice formula subtly re-voiced into a modern classic. Not revolutionary, just evolutionary.
Perhaps more accurately, de-evolution evolutionary, in that it's very retro and vintage-inspired modern Moog.
