Those songs haven't changed my mind.

I like my Japanese made music a tad heavier..

Heh.
For me it started with Mouse Computer Nogizaka46 commercials that were funny enough to go viral in the west and even someone linked them here on GS.

Well, for the last two-three years I'm very much into Japanese music. I'm not sure if it qualifies strictly as Jpop however. My main focus currently are singers-songwriters like Anri Kumaki, Maiko Fujita, Ai Kawashima, Aoi Teshima etc etc, but I also love some of the more "plastic" stuff like Garnidelia or the aforementioned Perfume. Some AKB48 or other idol groups are also welcome (in moderate doses ). And yeah, it all started with anime and game opening songs for me

That also influenced my recent output. So far I have posted two such tunes on YT:

What I like the most about Japanese songs that I listen to is that they still put strong emphasis on melody, and use the chord progressions that I love, but which went out of fashion in the West some 30 years ago
I mean - pop is mostly all about the cliches, but I love their cliches
If I shut my eyes it sounds like I'm playing sonic - bravo

This is another one of these genres where I just assume the people into it and me are not looking for the same things in music.

Because it's BAD!

The Japanese can't write songs, it's really strange but true.

Lololol.

Maybe we should make a distinction between bubblegum-j-pop and Japanese popular music. There's so. much. out. there.

How on earth I forgot about Ringo Shiina in my previous post I'll never understand. Possibly my favorite j-pop artist.

Actually I love that bubblegum stuff too. It's the best bubblegum in the world :D

But I also noticed the thing NawSon has mentioned - it's just that I am on the other side of that fence

This music would never make it in the west. It's just too cheesy. I understand the appeal if you speak Japanese but for everyone else? why?

*Three* times in the last year or so I've heard a catchy tune coming out of my 12yo's room and asked, "Hey, that sounds great. What is it?" And three times the answer has been "The Jonas Brothers."

I'm in your exact demographic, and I'm just gonna say it out loud: this is fvcking embarrassing.

Thats a BS term and extinct in the globalized world (well, we have yet to see how globalizatoin changes after COVID). RE: borrowing from other cultures in music. It has been done a lot, and its not cultural appropriation IMO, and when it's done cleverly by smart artists, it's quite good and adds exposure to a genre or artists that would normally not get exposure in Western audiences.

Re: JPop, I am no expert but I think some of the really smart chillstep and EDM artists incorporate elements of it into their music. I believe it's rooted in their influences as they were developing as artists. For example, Porter Robinson is influenced by gamer culture and game music and also Japanese culture, and I think you can hear some of that in his works. For someone who grew up post Internet access, it totally makes sense. He is influenced by what he was exposed to. I think many new(er) EDM artists fall in that category .Its really no different than an older guy who grew up pre-Internet who was exposed to his parents Jimi Hendrix or Beatles LPs and having that music (of which he was never a part of that generation) being a big influence on music they made in 80s or 90s.

Indeed

Lets be very clear, there is absolutely no such thing as cultural appropriation because it implies theft and one cannot steal what cannot be owned and a group cannot and does not own such things as style and tastes.

It's a ludicrous concept to its very core.

I get exactly what J-pop is..which is why
I find that “trying” to write/compose a song
in that style is so exhausting.

J-pop, like K-pop and Euro-pop and whatever,
celebrates style over substance. There is
actually almost no song substance to it at all.
It is more a collection of “hooks” sequenced
together, every sound has to be its own hook,
lyrics are all cliche catch-phrases that roll off
the tongue easily and are fun to sing along
to, but have very little meaning.

The music appeals to a 9yr. old to 15 yr. old
demographic. There are only four themes
ever explored:
1. I want you I want to be with you.
2. I hate you and I’ll get even with you.
3. Nobody knows how I feel.
4. Let’s party.

I grew up on actual songs, not cut-and-paste
looped sequences, so for me doing J-pop
really isn’t rewarding. It is, however, annoying.
I’d rather not waste the years I have left
trying to second guess 11-year old girls.

I produced this a couple of years ago. Track took 4 hours to produce. Pitch Correcting vocals took 3 days. It was a nighmare.

Some of you seem to have a wrong idea about what J-pop is or isn't.

In the 1990s, the term J-pop came to refer to all Japanese popular songs except enka.
It is a very wide area.

This is a cover of a very popular J-pop song:

I've never thought of it as anything other than what's in the charts in Japan. I haven't payed much attention for years, but even now most of the popular stuff seems to be based on templates that were created in the nineties. Not much forward motion.
