Syncing drum machines on different tempos to achieve Quintuplet swing on hardware

I’m trying to wrap my head around achieving on hardware something I’ve done in Ableton. That is, quintuplet swing (or any other kind of interesting polyrhythms).

I’m software it’s simple; squash 7 midi notes into the space of a 4-4 bar, copy and paste, away you go.

But on hardware, this is a challenge. As I see it, the only way to have 7 equally spaced beats within the space Of a 4-4 bar is by having two drum machines each with different BPMs.

For example: one machine running 4-4 at 120BPM, another running 7-4 at 210BPM.

But then we run into the issue of syncing.

Is there a way to sync two devices playing at different BPMs? So, I guess, they would sync at the start of each bar, rather than beat...?

Am I making any sense? Am I way over complicating it? Have you achieved interesting polyrhythmic swing in hardware?

Cheers!
