Black keys

do black keys have an emotion of their own or is that all relative to the key you are in?

The emotion is in your heart.
Your instruments and tools don't have any.

But you can transpose those up and down the keyboard and achieve practically exactly the same emotive effect while incorporating white keys. It's all about the relative intervals between notes of the scale.

I say 'practically' since their are some very minor quirks owing to the sacrifices in a 12 note equal temperament scale.

As simonator says , pentatonic scale ', it's all about the intervals .

All the answers in this thread (so far) are incorrect. Each note and scale has its own color - they are different combinations of vibrations unique from one another. The practice of equal temperament seeks to hide this for the purpose of unlimited modulation but it can never be fully subverted. The more important question would be 'Why are you asking this question / what do you hope to achieve / how may these differences be accentuated or hidden via which techniques?'

I'd suggest doing something simple like recordingn a tune in all 12 chromatic transpositions and the putting them on shuffle in your car. Learning to tell them all apart would be meaningful accomplishment, but only a start if one is interested in this subject.
