I know most people here focus on synths, but if it's a next-generation Montage I wouldn't mind seeing it get a decent clonewheel engine. (Also the ability to assign MIDI channels as you like.)
The dream-but-it'll-never-happen wish is for it to get a polyAT keyboard, at least optional.

No ****e. It seems like most manufacturers give us pieces of technology while holding on to the Grand Prize for future releases, and the Grand Prize never comes.

Roland should make a synthesizer shaped as a Plotter.

Hopes: 12 OP dedicated hands on controls 61 key FM synth, with at least dual split. 16 voice with analog filters (that can be bypassed) and a sampling capability.

or

Yamaha getting back into the analog synth game

Reality: We have 4 new keyboards in the Reface series!

Yamaha are so late to the party with anything analogue, I can't see that happening. Maaaaaybe they'll put FM-X in a dedicated box soon but that's as far as I think they'll go with hardware synths.

I would be happy to be surprised, though.

Here for the gear

My bold prediction is FM-X49, FM-X61 with a cut-down 4-op fm engine, and uneditable AWM presets.

The broadcast will feature new product updates, announcements, artist performances, demos, interviews and a tour of "Innovation Road" – a living history of all Yamaha products.

Nothing here sounds like a good reason to get excited.

We should expect new synthesizer(s). Because Yamaha is celebrating 45 years of synthesizers.

Question is, what will it be?
A new Montage with more engines. It's possible. The Montage has been on the market for a while, and more engines are among the most requested features.
Analog polysynth is possible. Yamaha have put out several surveys and is the most popular suggestion from the community at ideascale.
An RS series groovebox is also highly requested.
A standalone FM synth with hardware control is also requested at top-5.

If it's none of these, it should be better or else...

A Reface based on the YM3812 with hands on controls and deep editing options would be fun though.

I love the sound of the "Sound Blaster".

I’m predicting a full size Reface CS. Which would be awesome. A full sized Reface line in general would be fantastic. Hopefully it’s not the Reface Keytar.

New product updates could just mean firmware revisions for Montage and MODX; or another piano simulation for both.

I don't think I'd dig a full-sized CS at CP pricing, unless it had polyAT and I fell in love with the whole experience. Because I think Yamaha could make a mean polyAT, if they put their resources into it. If instead it appears to be enshrouded in the cloud, then it must be God, and I'll shut my eyes like in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

But I'd buy a Reface VL in a New York minute.

I wrote Yamaha a while back to remake the VP-1. Since it would be cheaper to make now....even if just as a reface series. Less than 5 were made....I think they sold 2 or 3...and they had the original prototype they worked on (but who knows where that one is). This would let a lot of people explore a type of synthesis foreign to most.

That video shows of more of the "synth" side. The acoustics is where it reat shines.

So few videos of it exist.

I would be happy with a VL-1 reface too.

It just HAS to be editable from the front panel, none of the VL synths are.....not even the VP1. You have to use a computer editor.

Also....they have to make AND include a breath controller with it. That really makes it come alive. Even if this Reface cost more, it would totally be worth it. If it did well enough it may even convince them to do a full size version later.

I dont know of you have any of the VL line. You can get the monophonic and mono element VL7...but if you have no VL synthesis, get the EX5 (it basically has the VL7 engine in it....but I think less robust or slightly different. It may not come with as many "instruments" I wouldn't know, necer had any of the VL line. I only have the EX5, which is an underrated machine for sure, the Blue Beast!

You can even find an EX5 cheaper than a VL7 or the rack mounts. Look for an EX5 in disrepair, you can get a great deal. Mine had a bad battery and the floppy drive smashed (from the guy shipping it to the mainland U.S. from Hawaii. Missing 3 knob covers but I put on new ones. It cost me $250.

You can use this to edit the VL in the EX5...even though it was not meant for it.

More interesting info on the VP1.

I wish. I've been waiting 17 years for Yamaha to release a follow up to the RS7000. I think they would do an amazing job if they put their minds to it. The RS is still my favorite groovebox overall.

All Yamaha would have to do is replicate the original idea of the EX5 and put it into groovebox format with a CPU that isn't underpowered. Give it an AN and DX engine, AWM (Advanced Wave Memory) engine, FDSP (Formulated Digital Sound Processing) and VL (Virtual Acoustic) synthesis. This is all technology Yamaha had 21 years ago.

It would be the most amazing groovebox ever made.

It's also interesting how the market has come full circle. Back in the 90s Roland started it all with the MC303 and 505. Then Quasimidi, Korg, E-Mu, Ensoniq, and Yamaha released their own grooveboxes. By the mid 2000s, the stand-alone groovebox was more or less gone, except for the Korg Electribe series.

Then dedicated hardware/software came in with Maschine. Akai struggled to release their own hardware/software combo but never really got it "right" like NI did. Ableton Push also came out, and a lot of musicians went that direction.

Now the stand-alone groovebox is back. I hope Yamaha steps up to the plate.

No new Montage. No anything with an AN1x-engine. I'm with Jiffy—just a new Reface CS with bigger and more keys (which I will buy anyway).

Right—I meant no new synths with the AN1x engine integrated with something else (e.g., FM + AN1x, AWM + AN1x, etc.). I do expect full-sized versions of Reface machines to be announced (glad I waited on the CS). I don't expect any analog machines or a new Montage. No rack-synths or desktops either. Perhaps a new groovebox.

Their latest rack rompler the motif xs was released almost 10 years ago , they never released one for the xf nor the montage and it still sells for a premium price .

There's just no way the Montage is getting a "proper" follow-up so soon. As an owner I'd be happy with FW 3.0 with added features.

I'd love an RS7000-like groovebox - but that will never happen either, countered with "use Cubase". A Cloud-like online service might be a possibility.

Whenever they make announcements like this, it's always a good time to repost this masterpiece "jam":

A groovebox with the RS7000/RM1x-style form and sequencer but with a MODX engine inside would be nice.
