TR-909 Experts: Bassdrum via MIDI - Velocity Behaviour

I've finally finished my TR-9090 build and noticed something strange about the velocity response of the bassdrum.

At full velocity it sounds perfect to my ears but if I turn the velocity down, the level of the attack portion decreases much more compared to the level of the body. At the lowest velocity setting I'm left with almost zero attack, making the bassdrum sound like it has been lowpass filtered.

I know the rather primitive "transistor + OpAmp" - VCAs used in the 909 are not behaving linear at all and this kind of behaviour is to be expected and in fact part of the sound, but in case of the bassdrum of my 9090 it seems a bit extreme.

Can anyone confirm this or - even better - provide audio examples of a TR-909 bassdrum with attack turned all the way up and triggered via MIDI at all different velocity levels.

Much appreciated

Velocity triggers the four levels of accent if I'm not mistaken.
